The Faculty of Engineering at UNB is seeking practicing design engineers willing to help us transform the way engineering design is taught at UNB. Our goal is to produce engineering graduates who are recognized by employers for their design abilities, provide students with the opportunity to work under the guidance of practicing design engineers, and to be an engine for the local economy by working on industry-sponsored projects.
We are seeking engineers with design-experience to help us co-mentor final-year design projects in our Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Geological, Geomatics and Mechanical Engineering programs during the academic year.
Interested individuals will co-mentor with a Faculty member one or more teams on a part-time basis from September to December and from January to April.
Co-mentors are expected to meet with each team under their responsibility for one hour every week and to provide written feedback on the progress reports submitted periodically by the students. Meetings with the students can take place in the evening or weekend at a mutually convenient time and location.
The remuneration for the participating design engineers will be $50/hour. It is expected that the time commitment will be no more than 50 hours per team supervised. Mentors are remunerated for their time and expertise through the Engineering Opportunities Fund, which is generously supported by donations from UNB alumni and friends.
We deem experiential learning within industry as essential for our students, and therefore these funds are being used to support one of our top priorities. If mentors would like to donate, all or a portion, of their remuneration back to the UNB Engineering Opportunities Fund, we would be truly grateful, as this will continue to help us fund and grow the mentorship program in future years. A charitable tax receipt will be issued for the full amount donated.
All projects co-mentored by practicing design engineers will be sponsored by a client. We will endeavour to assign the practicing design engineers to projects that match their area of technical expertise. However, it is more the project management and design skills of the mentors that will be of value to the students.
Interested individuals should apply by sending a short CV to Dr. Juan A. Carretero. Applicants must be professional engineers (P.Eng.) and should state their field of expertise and the number of teams they wish to co-mentor.
