Walking safety

1. Be aware of what is around you.
2. Carry only the essential cards and money.
3. Walk close to the curb.
4. Never assume a parked car is empty.
5. Avoid walking by shrubbery, darkened doorways and alleys.
6. If you carry a purse, briefcase or bag, keep a tight grip on it so no one can steal it.
7. At night, stay in well-lit areas and use routes that appear more heavily traveled.
8. Always carry a cell phone.
9. Avoid walking alone through isolated areas; avoid shortcuts through parking lots, parks and deserted areas.
10. Do not accept rides from strangers or anyone who appears impaired (alcohol or drugs).
11. If you know you will be returning late at night, consider what you will be wearing: Can you run quickly?

If you feel uncomfortable walking, contact Safewalk or arrange for a Campus Security escort. Familiarize yourself with the locations of blue light campus emergency phones. Dial 911 on your phone and keep your finger over the call button.

If you are followed by a pedestrian

Be aware of what is around you. Cross the street. Go directly to the nearest open business and call for help. Wait there until police arrive.

If you are followed by a vehicle

Turn and walk in the opposite direction. The driver will have to turn around and drive on the other side of the street to follow you. Get the license plate number and write it down! If necessary, write it on the sidewalk. Never try to outrun a vehicle. Change directions whenever necessary. Remember that you can do a U-turn faster than a car can. Seek help at a business or residence. Call police or Campus Security.
