Obscene communication

What to do when an abusive/obscene phone call is received

Landline phone (fixed in one place)

Most often the caller is looking for a reaction to the call. Don't react. Don't ask questions to the caller (i.e. Who is this?) As this is what they want you to do. Hang up the receiver promptly and gently. The caller may wish to frighten you, and this would provide the caller with a sense of accomplishment.

If the call is threatening you can dial *57 as soon as you hang up. This will lock in the last number dialed. You can then call the Police, and they can get the information on who it belongs to from the telephone company.

Cell phones

Mobile devices add a degree of protection and caution. Cell phone numbers are not listed in a phone directory so only those you give it to should know it; however, it is easier to exploit someone using a mobile phone.

Know how to take a screenshot of what’s on your phone especially if you are receiving things through apps like TikTok. That way you will have it if you go to the authorities.

A good defense is a good offence

Protect yourself from unwanted information by keeping your privacy in mind. Turn on your app’s privacy settings and how to deny permissions by default. Make sure your friend networks are limited to people you know and do not accept invites from someone you do not know.

If you are selling an item online, make sure the buyer does not come to your home or residence. You can often pick a public place like a coffee shop or a library to do the exchange. You may also meet in the lobby of the Security Office which is open and unlocked 24 hours a day.

Make sure to know your phones IMEI number in case it is stolen. You can check it by entering the following into the keypad: *#06#
