Meet our team

Fredericton | M.Ed., C.CC., LCT, Acting Director

Erin Crossland

I have had the privilege of counselling UNB and STU students at UNB Counselling Services since 2009. I love working in a campus community and appreciate the diversity of individuals within it.

University fosters a great deal of growth, resilience and change and I am grateful to help guide and support students along their university journey. In sessions I aim to provide a safe, empathic and comfortable environment for students. I bring sincerity, humour, connection, mindfulness, curiosity, goofy analogies, a background in team environments and athletics to support students and challenge them to build upon their skills and strengths.

In addition to counselling, I facilitate a variety of events through the Positive Mental Health Team. These events are fun, interactive and promote wellness, social health and community building and are open to all students on campus. I hope to see you there!

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Mathieu Cormier

I am originally from the ever-so-distant shores of Moncton, New Brunswick, though I have called the capital region my home now for over a decade. In counselling, I tend to vary my approach between cognitive-behavioural and interpersonal techniques based on need.

I also have a very strong penchant for tenets of positive psychology and will often work to focus sessions on things like creativity, personal growth and prosocial behaviour. I am fluently bilingual and can offer counselling in both French and English on request.

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Kate Gates

I have worked in post-secondary institutions for over 20 years and have always believed that the learning which takes place outside the classroom is an important part of the experience. So much life change and personal growth can occur during the span of a degree program, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with students at all stages of this experience.

My counselling approach is client-centered and eclectic, as I draw on multiple theoretical orientations and techniques. My hope is that when a student walks into my office they will experience a safe space where they can explore any aspect of their emotional well-being.

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, LCT, Counsellor

Sarah Johnson

I am originally from the West Coast, but have called UNB “home” since 2015, and joined the Counselling Services team in 2018. I love our campus community, and find working with university students to be both rewarding and inspiring! It is an honour to witness people harnessing their inner strength and resilience in the process of personal growth, and making progress toward their goals.

In addition to individual counselling, I enjoy facilitating therapeutic groups, and believe strongly in the power of human connection as an agent of change. In my free time, I am an enthusiastic dog and cat mom, plant collector, traveler and foodie. I practice hot yoga daily, and will sing its praises to anyone who’ll listen!

Fredericton | M.SW, RSW, Counsellor

Susan Lee

I am from Saint John, N.B. and am happy to join the UNB Counselling team after working and studying in post-secondary support in Ottawa and overseas. I like to bring warmth, curiosity, humour and creative energy to my engagement with students. I believe students have deep resources of inner wisdom and strength that when drawn upon and cultivated can lead to a healthier, more meaningful and satisfying life.

Helping make the university a welcoming place for First Nations students, first-generation students and international students is something I value. I am LGBTQ+ positive and open to ways of being which may be different from mainstream societal expectations. When I’m not at UNB, I enjoy going out to see live music, walking in nature, connecting with family and friends, and crafting.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT, Mental Health Strategist

Matthew MacLean

As the Mental Health Strategist, I am responsible for helping UNB craft a comprehensive, multi-component and targeted plan to support student well-being and mental health across campus.

I've previously worked at UNB in the Student Accessibility Centre and spent several years at NBCC before returning to UNB for my current role. When not at work, I enjoy making experimental soups, playing complicated board and card games and practicing yoga.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT-C, Counsellor

Elis Mayara Nobre Moreira

I am from Brazil and worked there as a clinical psychologist for 10 years before coming to Canada in 2021 to attend UNB as an international student.

While doing my master’s in counselling, I worked on a project with QTBIPOC Students at UNB and at the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, developing presentations about diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.

As a counsellor I use a holistic view and a combination of evidence-based interventions. However, the most important thing for me is to offer a warm and safe space for students to share their concerns.

I believe that everyone is unique, and I feel honoured to walk alongside my clients on their journey to change. I provide counselling in either English or Portuguese!

Fredericton | M.Ed., Counsellor

Rohini Sharma

Home for me has been many places—India, Africa, and now, for over two decades, Canada.

I consider my counselling approach to be client-centred, strengths-based, and diversified, to meet the unique needs of students. I hope to provide a warm, safe, and compassionate space where I can work collaboratively with students to assist them in accepting themselves, making healthy choices in all aspects of their lives, and helping them reach their full potential. I feel honoured to be part of a student’s healing journey. I can provide counselling in either English or Hindi.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, collecting (cool) rocks on the beach, reading, and rewatching Marvel movies!

Saint John | M.Ed, CCC, LCT, Counsellor

Trish Murray-Zelmer

I'm a former international student originally from the United States and have been living and working on Wolastoqey land since 2008.

I have had the privilege of working with university students for over 10 years. I believe in empowering students by helping them harness their strengths and values while respecting them as the experts of their own lives. I strive to provide a safe, compassionate, and trauma-informed space for each of my clients in a way that is meaningful to them. Drawing from multiple therapeutic approaches, I work with the client's expertise on what works for them to co-create a path forward for students.

When not in the office, I am often found hiking, travelling, gaming, baking, and hanging out with my rabbit.

Fredericton | Administrative Assistant

Tanya Jones

I have been with Counselling Services since 2004 and love helping students! I also love working with our team to provide the best service to students possible. In addition to helping students, I am the plant caretaker at Counselling and routinely send students home with a little baby plant of their very own.

When I’m not on the 2nd Floor of the CC Jones Student Services Centre, I can most likely be found at the local hockey arena or cuddling with my rescue Beagle, Beau.

Saint John | Counsellor

I grew up in Menahqesk (Saint John) and am grateful to be back in my home by the sea. I have had a winding path to counselling; I have an MA in Museum Studies and worked in museums and archives before changing careers. I worked in the substance use disorder recovery field immediately prior to starting the MEd in Counselling program at UNB Fredericton.

My approach to counselling is person-centered and integrative. I draw from the interpersonal process approach, cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, feminist therapy, and queer theory. I strive to create a warm and accepting environment where I can work collaboratively with students to address the issues causing them distress.

In my spare time you can find me embroidering, making art, or hanging with my cat.

Fredericton | M.Ed., Counsellor

Olivia Henley

I was born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador but have called New Brunswick my home for the last 7 years. Being a recent student myself, I understand the struggles and stress academics can cause. I take pride in creating a safe space for my clients to talk about whatever obstacles they feel are inhibiting them from reaching their goals. My counselling approach is very client-centered, but everyone is unique and together we will find what tools work best for you.

Other things about myself; I love sports, I am a cat mom, I love to be outside walking or hiking with friends, and I enjoy doing hot yoga.

Saint John | MSc., CCLS, Counsellor

I am originally from Winnipeg, MB, and moved to the Maritimes over 10 years ago, which I now consider home. I have a background in psychosocial care, health, trauma, grief and loss, and have worked in healthcare, community and not for profit settings.

I enjoy delivering workshops, keynote speaking, as well as facilitating therapeutic groups on the topics of (but not limited to), mindfulness, self-care/self-compassion, stress management and coping skills, healthy boundaries, loss, and adjusting to a new normal. I strive to provide a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment that is student-goal focused whether this be through individual sessions or group programming. I believe strongly in the mind-body connection and feel treating the whole person (physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health) is very important in order to reach optimal overall health and well-being.

In my downtime I can be found at the beach, enjoying nature, and exploring the world through the eyes of a toddler. I enjoy connection and strive to live a balanced lifestyle.

Fredericton | M.Ed., Counsellor

Chamel Khoury

I am very grateful to be part of the team at UNB Counselling Services.

I approach counselling with the view that people are fundamentally good and doing the best they can, and that problems emerge when we struggle to meet our diverse needs as inherently bio-psycho-social-spiritual creatures. I believe that self-discovery and insight are conducive to personal growth, especially when couples to modalities based on acceptance and compassion. Above all, my most sincere aspiration is to provide a setting where students feel recognized, accepted and validated for their humanity.

When I am not spending time with my beloved family, you might find me gardening, immersed in nature, or running the beautiful Fredericton-area trails.

Fredericton

Christina Rauska

I returned to the land of Wabanaki ten years ago after spending over a decade living overseas. My travels have given me a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and the importance of living authentically.

I'm excited to bring this perspective to my work at UNB Counseling Services. As a lifetime learner, I understand that academic life can be a time of growth, self-discovery, and meaningful challenges.

I aim to provide a safe, supportive space where students can creatively explore their feelings, relationships, and any concerns they face in an environment free from judgment. While I continue to expand and integrate my theoretical approach, students can expect a client-centered framework built on empathy, respect and understanding.

Outside of work, I enjoy a daily yoga practice, walking with my pup in the woods, immersing myself in nature, spending time with family and friends, and exploring our beautiful world.

Fredericton

Whitney McCoy

I am from Fredericton, located on the unsurrendered and unceded traditional territory of the Wolastoqey people. As a UNB alumnus and a current graduate student, I am familiar with the initial and ongoing challenges of significant life transitions and navigating academia that coexist with those outside one's educational career; it can be hard to balance. I aim to provide a supportive environment where clients feel seen, heard, and respected in their stories, struggles and aspirations.

I appreciate wholistic wellness and hope to create a space for clients to engage in self-discovery, explore their emotions, connect with their values, and identify their inner strengths and wisdom.

Off-campus, I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends, engaging in outdoor activities, creating or admiring art, listening to music or podcasts, practicing yoga and cooking yummy food. Essentially, I love any activity that deepens my connection with others, myself, and nature.

I am dedicated to creating a safe and understanding space where your whole self feels supported. Our work will focus on your unique strengths and wisdom, and the valuable perspective your story offers. I have been a post-secondary student for ten years and I appreciate the changes, pressures and balancing act of academic life.

I am originally from Tiohtià:ke/Montreal and Kjipuktuk/Halifax and have lived along the Wolostoq for a year. In my free time, I find joy in spending time with my family, gardening, staying active in nature, listening to music and immersing myself in fiction. These interests not only ground me but also inspire me to support others in finding balance and fulfillment in their own lives.

I look forward to collaborating with you on your wellness journey.

Fredericton

Brett McCavour

My approach to counselling is grounded in empathy, respect, and collaboration, ensuring that each client feels valued and understood as we work together to explore their unique experiences and foster meaningful growth.

I take a holistic approach, addressing the interconnectedness of mental, emotional and physical well-being. With five years of experience working in a post-secondary setting, coupled with my background as a student and student athlete, I can relate to the challenges and pressures that university life can present.

I believe that everyone has inherent strengths and resilience, and I look forward to helping students harness these qualities to navigate their challenges and achieve their goals.

Outside of counselling you can find me on the soccer field, hiking with my dog, cuddling with my cat or spending time with friends and family.
