This year, we’ve been reflecting.
The 150th anniversary of Confederation has encouraged us and millions of others across the country to consider our history. UNB has roots reaching back to before Canada was established as a nation, and our rich 232-year history has been filled with highlights, firsts, and breakthroughs.
This milestone also provides us with the opportunity to look to the future. Where do we see ourselves in 50, 100, or another 150 years? UNB has been a trailblazer since 1785 and that entrepreneurial spirit continues to this day. Our faculties, researchers, students, staff and alumni are continuing the UNB tradition of creating, discovering, and innovating.
As a nation, we have many accomplishments to be proud of. But our history is more complex. We have made many mistakes and Canada 150 offers us a chance to reflect on our failures as well as our successes.
As a university, our work transforms the potential of our province and our citizens. This notion leads us in our commitment to reconciliation. UNB acknowledges the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the importance of the call to bridge the educational attainment gap within one generation. We know we can help create the country that we always ought to have been, as outlined in the Peace and Friendship Treaties drafted in the 18th century.
Every day we have the opportunity to do good. At UNB, we are always looking for new ways to improve the world around us, be it through artistic expression, ground-breaking innovation, scientific exploration, or engaging with Indigenous communities and serving as leaders in reconciliation.
“Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet,” Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables.
