Sustainable Transportation

Transportation connects people to essential services, and to each other. Many people use various modes of transportation every day, making the transportation sector in Canada a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This module introduces the transportation modes that are more sustainable and produce less emissions.

Key definitions and acronyms

Active transportation: Any form of human-powered transportation.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: Emissions that effectively act like a greenhouse or a layer of insulation for the Earth: they trap heat and warm the planet.

Micromobility: Small, low-speed vehicles such as electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters).

Multi-modal transportation: Refers to using at least two different modes of transport in a journey to move goods from one point to another.

Sustainable transportation: Refers to the provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people which in turn ensures the advancement of economic and social development. This is conducted in a manner that is safe, affordable, accessible, efficient and resilient, while minimizing carbon and other emissions and environmental impacts.

Transportation: A means of conveyance or travel from one place to another.
