Are You Considering Applying to Grad School at UNB?
The recommendations that follow assume that you are applying to conduct research with a specific faculty supervisor or supervisors. There are some programs where this is not the case.
Look up information on potential supervisors.
The potential supervisor should be highly qualified in the expected area of research. Check their biographies on their website, noting their research interests, publications and other academic activities; graduate students they have supervised.
Look for blogs, discussion groups, or social networking sites they may have in order to get a sense of who they are.
Contact the potential supervisor before applying to the graduate program to make sure they are open to, and available for, taking on new graduate students from the upcoming admission competition.
Check with professors you know who might be aware of faculty in your area of interest. They could offer valuable insights to help you identify and evaluate potential supervisors. Any linkages that they might have to the research group of interest would be very useful in introducing yourself.
Contact the unit's graduate office and visit in person / by videoconference if possible. Talk to the graduate administrator (the administrative staff member overseeing the graduate program). These people can be an invaluable source of information about the program and the faculty.
Arrange to speak face-to-face (or arrange for an online meeting) with potential supervisors and, if applicable, see if you can visit their research facilities.
Reach out to other students who have worked with the supervisor. Inquire about comments the style of supervision, the frequency of contact, the level of independence, the supervisor's personal interaction style, and other issues that may be relevant to you.
