Common questions

Our graduate program offers two Master’s degrees: the course-based Master of Engineering (MEng) and the research-based Master of Science in Engineering (MScE). We also offer a research-based PhD.

Master of Engineering (MEng)

  • course based
  • self-funded
  • flexible course options
  • no thesis, no supervisor required
  • Start date is fall term only, apply from November to February to be considered for fall start.

Master of Science in Engineering (MScE)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The GGE department is small and there is high competition for acceptance in our graduate programs. Acceptance is often based on the availability of supervisors and/or financial assistance.

One thing you can do to increase the likelihood of being accepted is approach a faculty member working in your desired area of research and see if they will agree to supervise your research.

Tips when applying

If you find that no research positions are available, you may wish to consider the course-based MEng as an alternative. We occasionally have students recruited from the MEng to join MScE research teams as positions open up and funding becomes available (this also allows Professors to get to know you in class and see if you'd be a good fit for a research team).

No, you can apply without a supervisor. The course based Master of Engineering (MEng) does NOT require a supervisor.

However, if you want to pursue a research based Master of Science (MScE) or PhD, it is recommended to reach out to faculty to see if a supervisor has funding available.

Scholarship opportunities are routinely shared with current students.

Most scholarships for incoming students are aimed at research-based students for whom a supervisor will nominate for an award.

Other scholarships require some academic history (so you may be eligible after a term at UNB with grades that meet the requirement).

Scholarships

Requirements vary depending on the program to which you are applying.
