Clinical psychology PhD program

The clinical psychology program in the University of New Brunswick’s Department of Psychology provides doctoral-level training that prepares students for careers as professional psychologists competent in assessment, intervention, research, supervision, and evaluation in a wide range of academic and clinical settings.

The clinical program provides generalist clinical training, preparing students to obtain core knowledge in assessment and intervention for individuals across the lifespan. The generalist training will equip students for practice in rural and urban settings, thereby increasing clinical opportunities after graduation.

The program follows the scientist-practitioner model, with an emphasis on individualized training within a generalist developmental framework. Following from the scientist-practitioner model, the program places strong emphasis on research training and experience through formal course work, two research apprenticeships, and the doctoral dissertation.

This focus on research is balanced with professional training acquired through clinical skills courses and practica that begin in the first year of the program.

The general theoretical orientation of the clinical psychology program falls within an integrated, developmental biopsychosocial perspective, although f. Faculty interests span of a number of domains, including:several content domains across the lifespan including:

  • child/adolescent psychology
  • health psychology
  • forensic psychology
  • mental health interventions
  • mental health interventions
  • human sexuality
  • body image and disordered eating
  • women’s issues
  • neuroscience
  • cognitive psychology
  • social and cultural psychology
  • sport and performance enhancement

Accreditation

The clinical psychology program at UNB is a CPA-accredited program. Additionally, the program is designed to provide students with academic and professional training necessary to meet the requirements for licensing with the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick.
