Out-of-the-classroom learning experiences offer students a unique chance to connect with their local or global community, apply classroom learnings to real life and shape their future careers.
UNB provides a wide range of experiential education opportunities available in all 14 faculties. Recently, UNB’s International Offices launched a Summer Term in Europe Program (STEP). The STEP program is designed to help students build lifelong personal, academic and professional skills outside the classroom.
As part of STEP, brother and sister twin duo and Bachelor of Science in environmental management students Luke and Grace MacLean headed to the Republic of Croatia for a two-week work-study opportunity where they conducted terrestrial and marine research.
During their stay, Luke and Grace learned first-hand about reforestation, biodiversity, carbon footprint offsetting, rewilding and land management. They also had the chance to scuba dive, snorkel and network with other students and researchers across the globe.
The STEP program was created to support students from all disciplines, unlock their endless potential, and gain invaluable work experiences.
“I crossed scuba diving off my bucket list – this was one of the most exciting parts of the trip for me,” said Luke. “I saw octopuses and starfish in their natural habitat, in beautiful crystal-clear water.”
“I was exposed to various jobs to pursue after graduation,” added Grace. “I learned from so many interesting people from different educational backgrounds on my expedition."
Students interested in the STEP program for Summer 2023 can contact Veronica McGinn (Fredericton) and Ase Kelly Berg (Saint John) by email at STEP@unb.ca or fill out a form.
