October is Sustainability Month

UNB Sustainability and various groups on both our campuses host a variety of events all month long. The purpose of this month and these events is to educate and engage the UNB community in environmental, social and economic sustainability. We hope particiapnts learn something new so they can live more sustainably at home, at work and at school.

Oct. 1, 1 - 4 p.m.

UNB Sustainability Open House | Harriet Irving Library, 320D (Data Visualization Lab)
  • The UNB Sustainability team is hosting an Open House to collect feedback and ideas from students, staff and faculty for the development of UNB's 2025 - 2030 Climate Action & Sustainability Plan. Bring your own mug for free coffee and tea.

Oct. 2, 12:30 - 4 p.m.

Free Store | Harriet Irving Library, 109 (Lamsoq Polam)
  • Your one-stop store to donate gently used items that you no longer need (such as clothing, kitchen supplies, home decor, un-opened toiletries, etc.) and to shop for items that others have donated (all items are free). The Free Store will be open for several half days throughout the month, so folks will be able to donate items throughout the month, and shop for free.

Oct. 2, 6 - 7 p.m.

Virtual Tour of the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commision Landfill | Head Hall, C-10
  • Come and learn about where our solid waste goes, with a vritual tour of the landfill lead by the UNB Engineering Undergraduate Society and Brad Janes of the Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission.

  • Your one-stop store to donate gently used items that you no longer need (such as clothing, kitchen supplies, home decor, un-opened toiletries, etc.) and to shop for items that others have donated (all items are free). The Free Store will be open for several half days throughout the month, so folks will be able to donate items throughout the month, and shop for free.

  • The Green Society is hosting a Sustainability Conference to showcase various perspectives on sustainability, to highlight its importance within our community and beyond, and to encourage students to actively practice sustainability in their own lives.

Future events

Residence Energy Challenge

UNB Sustainability partners with Residence Life to host the annual Residence Energy Challenge for two weeks in January or February.

Participating residences compete against one another in hopes of reducing their energy consumption and taking sustainable action.


Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week Canada

SDG Week Canada is a national collaboration to increase awareness and egagement with the 17 United Nations SDGs on college and university campuses in Canada.

SDG Week Canada is led by the Sustainability Hub at UBC, SDSN Canada at the University of Waterloo, and Colleges and Institutes Canada.
