Larry, originally from New Brunswick, was born in 1959, missing his right arm from below the elbow, and was originally fitted at age three with a conventional prosthesis of the time in Ontario. Larry first visited UNB in 1969, working with Robert Scott and Bob Caldwell when the Bio-Engineering Department’s myoelectric program was in its infancy.
Larry was fitted at age ten with a myoelectric prosthesis at a time when the technology was in its pioneering stage. At that time, only an adult-sized hand was available, and electronics and rechargeable batteries were much heavier than in today’s smartphone world.
Larry proudly wore his new “bionic” arm, but within a year, found it to be too heavy for all-day wear, and eventually returned it to UNB to wait until he could grow into a system at the appropriate time. At age fourteen, he was successfully refitted, and has been using a myoelectric prosthesis regularly since that time.
We have also fitted Larry with a conventional prosthesis with a titanium hook for heavy work, a basketball attachment for his men’s league, and a keyboard device which he uses daily as a graphic designer and writer.
Larry has lived in Nova Scotia since graduating with a Degree in Communication Design in 1977. He and his wife are partners in a successful Halifax creative marketing and branding firm, Burke & Burke, which they started in 1985. His firm is responsible for the Clinic’s new brand, this website, and our marketing materials developed in 2012.
Larry uses the tools we have provided over forty years for his daily creative work and everyday activities, which include plenty of driving, basketball, SCUBA diving, volunteer activities, and walking his two energetic dogs at the same time.
