The Good Energy Scholarship is one of UNB's most prestigious awards. Sponsored by Irving Oil, the scholarships are valued at $10,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years for a total value of $40,000. More than 30 Good Energy Scholars will benefit over 10 years, beginning in 2022.
The Good Energy Scholarship is part of a $2-million gift committed by Irving Oil as part of UNB's It Begins Here campaign, the most successful fundraising campaign in the university's history. This gift will also help establish the Good Energy Bursary, awarded to undergraduate students who are in financial need.
"We share and support UNB's values of equity, diversity and inclusion, and, through this program, we will help address the inequities that exist in our province for students in underrepresented groups. We are pleased to be part of these efforts to build a diverse community of Good Energy Scholars over the next decade who will be well equipped to drive meaningful impact in their future work and communities."
– Ian Whitcomb, President of Irving Oil
In addition to the scholarship and bursary programs, a portion of the $2-million gift will support ongoing programming, including annual events for award recipients. Research opportunities will also be developed, aimed at advancing a more sustainable energy future in our region.
The Good Energy Scholarship is awarded to New Brunswick residents who are beginning an undergraduate degree program at UNB in Fredericton or Saint John with a focus on supporting students from underrepresented groups. Selection is made based on academic achievement, with consideration given to students who are actively involved in community volunteerism and extracurricular activities. The application deadline is March 1.
