The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER has been designed to address the integrated wellness needs of the University of New Brunswick and the greater Fredericton community.
It provides facilities for fitness, recreation and high-performance athletics as well as new space for community research activities and services. It contains three full-sized gyms, two of which are recreational and the other is a high-performance gym for our varsity athletes and events such as graduation.
It was designed by B and H Architects in partnership with Sasaki and Associates. It was built by Moncton-based Acadian Construction.
UNB Fredericton's athletic facilities now rival the best across North America. The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER has also made UNB a leader in health and fitness in New Brunswick.
The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER is named after UNB Chancellor Richard J. Currie. Dr. Currie, a UNB alumnus and distinguished Canadian businessman, donated more than $20 million to support the construction of UNB Fredericton's newest building. Dr. Currie's gift is the largest single donation a New Brunswick university has ever received.
The center was officially opened on Oct. 7, 2011.
Many others have been inspired by Dr. Currie's gift and have also given generously.
Recognizing that UNB’s desire for a healthy community must first begin at home, The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER provides a variety of recreation and fitness spaces that are available to students, faculty, staff and members of the greater Fredericton community.
UNB's recreation facilities and programs are free to students. Memberships are available - minimum age of 12 with parental supervision; or 15 without supervision, but parental permission required.
The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER is also home to the Reds basketball and volleyball programs.
To learn more about recreation services and activities at the CURRIE CENTER, contact Recreation Services (REDS Rec).
There are more than 1,400 stadium seats in the Performance Hall. For a $1,000 donation, payable over five years at $200 annually or just $16.66 monthly, you can name a seat in honour of a favourite professor, former classmate or loved one or put your own name on part of UNB’s history.
There are also other opportunities such as naming a locker room, strength centre, cardio centre as well as a naming a basketball or volleyball net.
You can also donate online to the CURRIE CENTER.
