What to do in a medical emergency

Internal accident reporting procedure

Intent: To define the University's accident and medical emergencies reporting procedures.

Scope: All persons, Fredericton campus.


Any injury which involves fatality, loss of limb, occupational disease, admission to hospital; or any accidental explosion, exposure to a biological agent (chemical or physical), whether or not injury has occurred, is required to be reported by the administrative head of the department to the Safety Office, as well as to Worksafe NB immediately at 1-800-222-9775.

Employees

  • When an accident occurs which results in personal injury, the employee's immediate supervisor will complete the University accident report form. This form must be completed for all accidents regardless of their severity.
  • The completed accident report form will then be signed by the employee's Department Head and copies forwarded to the Security Office, theEHS Office and the Budget Office, UNB, Campus Mail. This should be done within 24 hours of the occurrence.
  • In the case of a serious accident or trauma, the Security Office should be contacted by telephone as soon after the occurrence as is practical. In such cases, Security will inform the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources.
  • The Associate Vice-President of Human Resources, as appropriate, will inform the President and the Director of Development and Public Relations.

Non-employees

  • When an accident occurs which results in personal injury to a student, or other non-employee, the person in charge of the area where the accident took place shall complete a University accident report form and forward copies to the Security, Safety and Budget Offices. This should be done within 24 hours of the occurrence.
  • In the case of a serious accident or trauma, the Security Office should be contacted by telephone as soon after the occurrence as is practical. In such cases, Security will inform the Director of Student Affairs. The Director of Student Affairs, as appropriate, will inform the President and the Director of Development and Public Relations.

Medical emergencies

Intent: To determine services provided and procedures for obtaining assistance in case of medical emergency.

Scope: All persons


Transportation, or first aid assistance, may be obtained by calling the Security Office and describing the situation to the officer on duty.

The officer will dispatch the Security vehicle or a police cruiser to provide the necessary assistance.

Fire prevention officers, police officers, or security officers will call for an ambulance when necessary.

Transportation from the campus to the home of employees injured on campus may be arranged through the Security Office if necessary.


The University Student Health Centre provides a health service for students as well as emergency first aid for students injured on campus. It is recommended that any medical emergency involving students or employees be transported directly to the emergency room of the local hospital.

Security & Traffic will provide emergency transportation, when necessary, for persons who are immobilized as a result of injury or illness while on campus, or make the necessary arrangements for ambulance pick-up.


Emergency procedures in the event of death or anticipated death

Intent

To define the university's emergency procedures to be used in event of death or anticipated death.

Scope

All persons, Fredericton Campus.

Death of a student

The UNB Officer first aware of the death will inform Campus Security immediately. Security will contact the Director of Student Affairs (or, in the Director's absence, the Director of Counselling), and the Director of Development & Public Relations and Information.

The Director of Student Affairs will inform the President, the Director of Counselling, a member of Campus Ministry, and such other individuals (e.g. the Registrar, the student's department head or advisor) as the Director deems necessary.

The Director of Student Affairs, in consultation with the President, will determine the most appropriate person to make initial contact with the next of kin on behalf of the University.

A member of the Campus Ministry and the Director of Counselling, in cooperation, will contact campus friends of the deceased and, as appropriate, check with Health Services, the Director of Residential Life, the International Student Advisor and the Faculty/Department/Division in which the student is enrolled.

Any memorial service will be organized by the Campus Ministry, who will also supervise the tidying up of personal effects.


Death of a member of faculty or staff

The UNB Officer first aware of the death will first inform Campus Security, who will contact the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources and the Director of Development and Public Relations.

The Associate Vice-President of Human Resources will inform the President, the employee's Department, the Vice-President (Finance and Administration) or Vice-President (Academic), as appropriate, the Director of Counselling and the Campus Ministry.

Campus Ministry and the Director of Counselling, in cooperation, will contact campus friends of the deceased and such other individuals or departments as they deem necessary. Campus Ministry will be responsible for any campus memorial service.


Anticipated deaths

In the case of an anticipated death of a student, or a member of faculty or staff, the Director of Student Affairs or the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources, as appropriate, will confer with the President to determine the action to be taken by the University.


Public relations

In any of the above eventualities, all enquiries from the media, or contact initiated by the University with the media, will be handled by the Office of Development and Public Relations.
