Study languages at UNB
There are many economic, social, and intellectual benefits of gaining knowledge of other cultures and languages:
- Languages allow you an insider’s view of another culture and a new view of your own
- Being able to connect with people in their language or to read texts in languages other than English is fun and empowering
- Studies show that language skills enhance employment and career opportunities in many fields (e.g. government, business, teaching, hospitality, law, health care, international and public relations), leading to higher income and greater career mobility
Try out a new language
Our courses start at the basic level so you can try out a class in any language that interests you. Whatever language you choose, it will change how you view the world and how the world views you!
- German
- Spanish
- Chinese
- Japanese
- Russian
Why learn a new language? It can help to:
- “open up sources of personal fulfilment” (Kramsch 2009)
- lead to positive attitudes toward other peoples, cultures, and countries (European Council 2012)
- promote global awareness and intercultural competence (Curtain & Dahlberg 2004)
- foster cognitive flexibility (Bialystok 2011; Diamond 2010), creativity, problem-solving and divergent thinking (Bamford & Mizokawa 1991), and better listening and attention (Krizman et al. 2012)
- contribute to the development of self-esteem and self-confidence (Saunders 1998)
