The roots of DataNB extend all the way back to 2010, when Ted McDonald and Michael Haan began laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the New Brunswick Institute for Research, Data, and Training (NB-IRDT).
This preliminary work included working closely with various groups in the NB government on the necessary legal, financial and operational structure within which the Institute would host and use confidential data on NB residents. Michael left UNB in 2015, and Ted became the inaugural director of NB-IRDT that year. NB-IRDT changed its name to DataNB in 2025.
Initial funding came from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Province of New Brunswick.
Our work continues today with support from the Province and funding from organizations such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF), Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) and others.
DataNB’s governance and operational model draws from the success of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, adapted in close collaboration with provincial privacy and security officers to align with New Brunswick’s legislation and data environment.

L’origine de DataNB remonte à 2010, lorsque Ted McDonald et Michael Haan ont jeté les bases de ce qui deviendrait l’Institut de la recherche, des données et de la formation du Nouveau-Brunswick (IRDF-NB).
Ces travaux préliminaires se sont déroulés en étroite collaboration avec divers groupes du gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick afin de définir le cadre juridique, financier et fonctionnel nécessaire à l’hébergement et à l’utilisation, par l’Institut, de données confidentielles sur la population du Nouveau-Brunswick. En 2015, M. Haan a quitté l’UNB, et M. McDonald est devenu le premier directeur de l’IRDF-NB. En 2025, l’IRDF-NB a pris le nom de DataNB.
Le financement initial provenait de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation et de la Province du Nouveau-Brunswick.
Aujourd’hui, nos activités se poursuivent grâce au soutien de la Province et au financement d’organismes tels que les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC), la Fondation de la recherche en santé du Nouveau-Brunswick (FRSNB), l’Unité de soutien SRAP des Maritimes (USSM), entre autres.
Le modèle de gouvernance et d’exploitation de DataNB s’inspire du succès du Centre manitobain des politiques en matière de santé, adapté en collaboration avec les agents provinciaux de la vie privée et de la sécurité pour refléter les lois et les caractéristiques propres au Nouveau-Brunswick.
