Academic membership in the CIC

The Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity is a comprehensive multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial unit offering training, research and development. We bring together researchers from across disciplines — science, business, computer science, law, engineering and more — to collaborate and innovate.

Training the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity

Our academic membership is available to:

  • University of New Brunswick researchers
  • Post-graduate students and postdoctoral fellows studying and working at CIC
  • Professionals in academia, industry and government

Member

A membership is given to all researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who work and study at the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity.

Membership benefits

  • Acknowledgement as a member on CIC website
  • An opportunity to study under CIC researchers on select industry projects
  • Networking opportunities
  • Free registration for the annual Privacy, Security and Trust Industry Day
  • Promotion of members’ research within CIC’s network and social media

Members' responsibility

Members are expected to be in good academic standing and to support CIC in its mission, vision and values.

Members are expected and participate in some of the following:

  • Engage in a speaking event such as a webinar, student event, etc.
  • Actively participate in CIC academic publication activities
  • Write blog posts to be shared on the Cyber Daily Report and/or social media
  • Participate in CIC events, programs and presentations
  • Volunteer for a role in CIC events such as the Privacy, Security and Trust conference
  • Participation in CIC community outreach and mentorship opportunities

Affiliate

These memberships are by invitation from the Director only and are mostly given to CIC alumni or researchers who are academically associated with the Institute. Affiliate members must be actively involved and engaged in cybersecurity related research, publication and/or education activities.

Affiliate membership benefits

  • Acknowledgement as a member on CIC website
  • Letters of support or collaboration from CIC team on research grants
  • Promotion and knowledge mobilization of members’ research within CIC’s network and social media

Affiliate members' responsibility

Affiliate members are expected to be profiled on the CIC website and support CIC in its mission, vision and values.

To maintain membership, affiliate members are expected to participate in at least one of the following per year:

  • Engage in a speaking event such as a webinar, student event, etc.
  • Actively participate in CIC academic publication activities
  • Write a blog post to be shared on the Cyber Daily Report and/or CIC social media channels
  • Participate in a CIC event
  • Volunteer for a role in CIC events such as the Privacy, Security and Trust conference as a moderator, facilitator, host, steering/ technical/ local organizing committee, etc.
  • Collaboration in CIC-led research projects
  • Participation in CIC community outreach and mentorship opportunities
  • Participate in peer review requests

Members who are inactive in institute activities for a 12-month period will be reviewed and may result in being removed from the membership list. Lapsed members can reapply for membership after a 1-year waiting period and must show how they will contribute to CIC moving forward.

Fellow

Fellow membership is awarded in exceptional circumstances to professionals at the highest level in academia, industry and government. They are individuals and organizations committed to long-term engagement with the institute.

Fellow members are expected to be profiled on the CIC website and support CIC in its mission, vision and values.
