Ethical Issues in Health Care

This course provides an introduction to contemporary issues in health care. Topics covered include: ethical theory, relationships in health care, informed consent, abortion, euthanasia, scarce medical resources, and acquiring and distributing body parts.

Note: Students cannot take both PHIL 2209 and PHIL 3207 for credit. Although open to all students, this course does not count toward the Major or Honours requirements for Philosophy students. Students who have previously taken PHIL 3203 (Health Care Ethics) online cannot take PHIL 3207 online for credit.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

• Understand how to compare and contrast major ethical theories.
• Be able to apply ethical theory to ethical issues arising in health care.
• Learn to summarize and evaluate academic articles.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

• Participation (10%)
• Writing assignment #1 (5%)

• Writing assignment #3 (20%)
• 3 x quizzes (15% each)
