This course offers a general survey of philosophy from Rationalism to German Idealism. It will concentrate upon the concerns of modern philosophy by looking at the philosophies of such figures as Machiavelli, Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche. Designed to bridge the gap for upper year students.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

• Learn to navigate and critically assess philosophical problems presented by the most influential figures in the modern period.
• Examine the historical, scientific, and cultural contexts of the readings covered in the course.
• Develop a framework for contrasting and comparing key voices in the enduring philosophical conversation that is the history of philosophy.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

• 3 x quiz tests (10% total)
• 2 x papers (paper 1: 10%, paper 2: 30%; 40% total)
• 4 x reading questions/text summaries (10% total)
• 2 x presentations (5% each; 10% total)
• 1 x final test (20% total)
• Participation (10% total)
