Family Violence Issues FVI 2001 Three (3) credit hours

Introduction to current theories, research and practice in family violence issues. Topics will include: themes of violence; dynamics of violence; gender relations; attitudes, myths and realities surrounding family violence; public versus private nature of family violence. Research from various perspectives will be evaluated.

This course is cross listed as SOCI 2001. Credit can only be obtained for one of FVI 2001 and SOCI 2001.

Prerequisite: Admission to the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program or permission of the instructor.

  • This is a core course for the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program at UNB.
  • The course introduces students to issues in family violence, which is increasingly recognized as a serious and widespread public health crisis, affecting individuals of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Students will learn about the theoretical explanations for family violence, its nature and extent in Canadian society, what makes individuals especially vulnerable to abuse and its consequences, as well as efforts to address and eradicate family violence.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

  • 4 x written assignments (10% each)
  • 2 x tests (30% each)
