UNB may be steeped in history and tradition but our eyes are focused clearly on the future.
What will this future bring? It will bring unlimited potential from our students, innovative research and boundless opportunities from our faculty and staff.
The future is centered around the more than 10,000 students, from more than 100 countries, studying across our campuses and partnership institutions – who are entrusting us to help propel them into their own individual future.
Because of our commitment to them, we continue to rank among the best comprehensive universities in Canada by Maclean’s magazine – and are top-ranked in Atlantic Canada for the fifth consecutive year.
As one of the largest employers in the province, with more than 3,000 people, we take seriously our commitment to our faculty and staff and have been ranked by the Globe and Mail as one of Canada’s Top 100 employers for the fifth time in six years.
Our research agenda continues to grow with UNB attracting over $40 million in external research annually. UNB is responsible for 70 per cent of all publicly funded research in the province of New Brunswick. Since 2000, UNB has managed 308 invention disclosures, and filed patent applications for 105 separate technologies with 92 patents issued.
Researchers have partnered with NASA to study irregularities in the ionosphere and we have become a world leader in developing MRI technology. These are just a sample of the innovative work being done at our institution.
Our Fredericton campus completed its first Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) report, developed to asses an institution’s practices in academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration. Institutions are recognized on a metal scale ranging from platinum to bronze. There are close to 900 institutions worldwide that have reported within STARS, 71 of which are Canadian institutions. We earned a silver rating, making UNB the first university in New Brunswick to achieve this certification and the third in Atlantic Canada.
Did you know that UNB has been named Canada’s most entrepreneurial university by StartUp Canada? It’s true and we are proud to say that we have incubated more than 100 startups since 2010.
We’re looking to the future with our It Begins Here campaign which recently wrapped up – raising $125 million to invest in our faculties, researchers, campuses and students. Fifty per cent has been specifically allocated for student financial support.
While we will always be proud of being Canada’s oldest English-language university, we will be equally proud of the role we will play in shaping the future.
