At the University of New Brunswick, there is so much of which to be proud. As the largest university in the province, and its most research intensive, we know that we make an indelible impression on New Brunswick and its people every single day.
We know we provide an exceptional and transformative experience for our students, about 13,000 of them enrolled in more than 80 degree programs across our two main campuses in Fredericton and Saint John. Established in 1785, UNB is Canada’s oldest English-speaking university. While our long and distinguished history is a point of pride, we refuse to rest on our laurels.
Consistently ranked among Canada’s top 10 comprehensive universities, UNB is also recognized as one of the best institutions of higher learning around the globe. The Center for World University Rankings, the largest academic ranking of global universities, placed UNB in the top four per cent of more than 25,000 institutions in 2016.
So we are big enough to deliver world-class teaching and research, but small enough to offer a progressive and personal experience to our students – at UNB, we average one full-time faculty member for every 16 students.
Seven of every 10 students come to UNB with a high school average of 80 per cent or more, and half of all high school graduates arrive at UNB with scholarships.
Home to 20 research institutes, we are leaders in innovation and discovery – three quarters of all the publicly funded research in the province takes place in our laboratories and hallways.
One of the province’s largest employers with more than 3,200 people working at UNB, we were recognized by the Globe & Mail as one of the top 100 employers in Canada for 2016.
Named as the nation’s most entrepreneurial university by Startup Canada, UNB transforms students into leaders and ideas into enterprises. In just one year, startups and spinoffs emerging from our university generated more than $48 million in new money for the province and accounted for some 450 jobs.
But being entrepreneurial is more than that for us – it’s a philosophy that extends across all disciplines. It’s about teaching our students and others how to propel ideas into opportunities for themselves and others. It is about leading the way towards effective social change.
