UNB has teamed up with Sun Life Financial to help improve the lives of those living with, or who are at risk of, developing diabetes.
The Sun Life Financial Living Well With Diabetes Initiative provides UNB with the resources to expand services at the Sun Life Financial Fitness Assessment Centre in Fredericton – now in its ninth year of operation. At the centre, kinesiology researchers, graduate and undergraduate students work together to deliver personalized fitness programs that improve the strength and health of students as well as the greater community.
This partnership, which connects participants with increased diabetes awareness, prevention and care services, will not only help nurture and grow our work at the centre, but also preserve our commitment to excellence in health and wellness.
“The University of New Brunswick carries a reputation for both quality and success,” says Paul Joliat, assistant vice-president, Sun Life Financial, “and we are excited to team up with them to launch this unique initiative, and continue to build on the work of the growing centre of excellence.”
Community participants benefit from the expertise of physiologists, dieticians and physicians through free education sessions that raise awareness of lifestyle factors that contribute to both preventing and managing diabetes, including the importance of physical activity and healthy living. With the focus on prevention, participants will have access to subsidized personal training and recreation services, as well as nutrition workshops, providing both practical skills and understanding that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
