Welcoming new faces to the UNB family

Every day, UNB strives for excellence in its quest to serve, educate and prepare its students for the future. I want to share with you some of the new faces and initiatives that are helping our students reach their full potential.

Sarah King (BPhil'06, PhD'18), director of the Office of Experiential Learning, helps students strengthen their academic learning and job readiness with hands-on experiences in the classroom and in their communities. In particular, under-represented groups like Indigenous students, low-income students and first-generation students are assisted in finding opportunities and funding.

On Feb. 21, Amanda Reid Rogers was installed as UNB's Piluwitahasuwin (one who promotes change in a good way toward truth of UNB), with the focus on promoting and expanding Indigenous culture and opportunities on our campuses and within the community.

We'll soon be welcoming Petra Hauf as vice-president Saint John, when she begins her new role in March. We salute Robert MacKinnon for his leadership on the Saint John campus and wish him the very best.

UNB alumnus Paul Mazerolle (BA’89) is UNB's next president and vice-chancellor. We look forward to welcoming him back to UNB in July. Congratulations, Dr. Mazerolle, it will be wonderful having you back on campus.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention our athletics teams. The UNB Reds and Seawolves continue to show their prowess and leadership in many areas of competition. This year, we welcomed the women’s hockey team back to the ice, the men’s hockey team is second in their league and the swim team excelled, picking up many medals in its latest competition. Arenas and gyms on both campuses reverberate with energy from athletes and fans.

alumni luncheon

Last month, we recognized some of our students at an alumni awards luncheon on the Fredericton campus. These last few months have brought exciting change and support for our students, as well as recognition for our alumni. Three UNB honorary degree recipients are among those inducted into the Order of Canada this year. Congratulations to Roxanne Fairweather (DLitt'08), Francis Pang (DLitt'01) and Lyse Doucet (DLitt'06).

Celebrating our students and alumni is a rewarding task. We have so many doing great things at UNB, in New Brunswick and around the globe. Please join us on April 5 in Saint John at our annual #ProudlyUNB Awards dinner as we recognize six distinguished alumni, two honorary members and one alumni group for their outstanding service. The evening will be filled with awe and recognition for this year’s recipients.

Warmest regards,
Jill
