An introduction to the study and evolution of animal behaviour, and the adaptive value of behaviour. The course focuses on ecological and evolutionary aspects, both the ultimate causes and effects of animal behaviour (why these behaviours are adaptive) and the proximate mechanisms by which behaviours are elicited (e.g., neural or hormonal mechanisms and control). Students also examine a behavioural aspect of their choice in small groups, and summarize the current scientific understanding for that specific behaviour using the four levels of analysis of animal behaviour.
