Travel Funding

UNB Graduate students on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses have access to a variety of travel funding from the University of New Brunswick, award donors, and external organizations.
Travel funding will normally be applied for during the winter and spring for fall travel, but be sure to contact our office should any travel opportunities arise.

Fredrik and Catherine Eaton Graduate Fellowships

Fredrik S. Eaton, Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick from 1993 to 2003, and his wife Catherine established the Queen’s University Belfast (QUB)-University of New Brunswick (UNB) Exchange Program in 2000 and contributed $1 million over a five-year period to endow the program.

Thanks to their generosity, approximately $40,000 is available annually to support graduate students and faculty to study and conduct research in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast through Fellowships and Visitorships. One graduate student per year from UNB and one graduate student per year from QUB have the opportunity to spend a minimum of 4 weeks or a maximum of 6 months at the other institution.

The Fredrik and Catherine Eaton Fellowships are open to Masters and Doctoral students enrolled in any program on the Fredericton or Saint John campus. The Fellowships will be valued at up to $10,000 each per year and may be used for activities at Queen's University Belfast, including:

  • Research or study in one or more laboratories or institutions;
  • Course work
  • Collaboration with a distinguished faculty member in the applicant’s field;
  • Travel and accommodation
  • Presenting papers or posters at academic conferences.

Application Process

Applicants must submit an electronic copy of the full application package (including the original form-fillable application and all attachments) to sgsaward@unb.ca by the application deadline March 15, 2024.

Applications must include the following:

  • Completed application form, which includes an itemized budget for the amount of funding requested
  • Curriculum vitae, including all awards, citations, publications, conference presentations, and the like
  • Academic transcripts from all institutions attended
  • A letter of support from the graduate supervisor or other qualified faculty advisor

Applicants who apply for conference support must provide an abstract of the paper or poster to be presented. Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed by the selection committee.

Selection Process

Applications will be adjudicated by a committee selected by the School of Graduate Studies.

Selection Criteria

Candidates will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Academic Excellence (40%): Academic record, publications, scholarships and prizes, including rate of completion of degree programs.
  • Research Potential (20%): Relevance of previous academic and professional training to proposed research; significance of proposed research to field; evidence of originality, good judgement, critical thinking and initiative; and, where reasonable, evidence of ability to bring projects to completion within an appropriate time.
  • Communication and Leadership Abilities (40%): Quality of written application, interview, teaching evaluations, mentoring, organizational abilities, community leadership, and involvement in university and/or professional organizations.

Administration and Reporting

The application process for the Fredrik and Catherine Eaton Fellowships will be administered by the School of Graduate Studies.  Normally, there will be no more than one Fellowship awarded per annum for each institution. Recipients must file a report on their activities, due within six months of their return to Canada.

School of Graduate Studies Travel Awards

Travel to academic conferences and for research can be an integral part of any graduate program.

Each department, on both of our campuses, is provided with limited travel funds in which they can provide to their students in the form of School of Graduate Studies Travel Awards.

Pam and John Little Overseas Scholarships

The Scholarships are open to UNB Masters and Doctoral students enrolled in any area to support periods of intensive research or study in the UK, with preference to students travelling to Oxford or London,  which will benefit the student and their program of study.

Applications are normally accepted during the fall and winter terms of the year preceding the term of study for the award, which is valued at up to $15,000. Deadline March 15, 2024.

MITACS Globalink Research Awards

The Mitacs Globalink Research Awards provide $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students in Canada to conduct 12 to 24 week research projects at international universities.

There are no deadlines for the MITACS GRA awards, but applications should be submitted well in advance of the planned travel.

Jumpstart your application

  • Talk to your faculty supervisor or university international office to identify a professor in one of the eligible destinations who works in your research area
  • Reach out to the professor(s) about your research and hosting your potential project
  • Get signatures from your home and host professors and university Office of Research Services (or equivalent), then submit your complete application by the suggested deadline (Mitacs recommends allowing 1–2 weeks to secure university signatures).

NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements

Canada Graduate Scholarships—Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) are available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Joseph-Armand Bombardier, Alexander Graham Bell or Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the master’s or doctoral level, or a Vanier CGS at the doctoral level.

This CGS-MSFSS supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities, or other research institutions outside of Canada.

Supplements of up to $6,000 are available to active CGS Master’s, CGS Doctoral or eligible Vanier CGS holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period.

Applications are submitted during spring and fall competitions. Deadlines: June 5 and October 5 annually.
