Meet Emily Thomson, who was a part of our 2021 and 2022 Pathways to Professions experiential learning program. NB-IRDT is proud to have had the opportunity to work with students on many projects and initiatives, and our student spotlight series will highlight some of the students we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with. 

Emily Thomson is a 4^th-year student at the University of New Brunswick pursuing a bachelor of science with a double major in biology and psychology (with honours in psychology). She will be graduating of 2023 and after graduation plans to either attend medical school or graduate school to pursue a master's degree.

Emily first learned about NB-IRDT online while searching for summer employment.

What was your role at NB-IRDT?

I have been working at NB-IRDT for the last 2 summers and am continuing to work part-time this fall. My role the first summer was as a data analyst in the VitalSignsNB stream , and the second summer I was a researcher on the P2P+ stream . Both summers I was working with our Chris Folkins, who led our research projects. My current role is continuing the work from the summer by writing a manuscript to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Have your educational and/or career goals changed at all because of your time with NB-IRDT?

My educational goals have only shifted in the sense that now I am quite certain that I want to incorporate research into my career. My time with NB-IRDT showed me what a career in research would look like. 

Looking back on your time and what you’ve done so far at NB-IRDT, what is your biggest accomplishment?

I think my largest accomplishment with NB-IRDT would be the personal growth I was able to experience. I feel so much more comfortable presenting to large groups. I also feel much more capable when it comes to writing and am more confident in my research. NB-IRDT has a great group of educators that are always willing to help.

How has this position impacted you? What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

I have met so many wonderful people in my time at NB-IRDT. I have not only made new friendships, but I have also had the opportunity to make professional connections. One thing that really stuck with me through my time at NB-IRDT is to put yourself out there and find opportunity where you can.

Any advice you’d like to give to people reading this?

The only advice I have for anyone looking for a new or challenging experience would be not to back down if it seems intimidating. You would be surprised at what you're able to accomplish by pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.

NB-IRDT has done so much to help my career. I’m very thankful for the opportunities that have been presented to me.
