Research at NB-IRDT among 27 Funded NB COVID-19 Projects

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers around the world have focused their efforts and expertise on detecting, treating, and responding to the virus and its aftermath. In New Brunswick, research is underway to address the challenges of COVID-19 – not only in relation to its global impact but also regarding specific issues affecting New Brunswick.
Recently, 27 New Brunswick research projects were awarded funds of $846,707 through the joint efforts of The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF), the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF), and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). With an additional $361,860 received in support from other sources, over $1.2 million will be applied to these research projects.
These 27 projects focus on COVID-19 detection and treatments, while also exploring the effects of the pandemic on individuals, their communities, and the local economy. Further support is being provided by AGE-WELL National Innovation Hub APPTA to ensure research findings are well communicated to funders, key stakeholders, and others who may benefit from this work.
One of the 27 funded research projects is being led by Dr. Sandra Magalhaes at NB-IRDT. An epidemiologist in UNB’s Department of Sociology, Dr. Magalhaes is examining community-level indicators that can help identify at-risk groups that are likely to be impacted by public health efforts to limit virus spread. By producing research to help create NB community profiles, this project aims to inform pandemic planning and help New Brunswick during its recovery phase.
