Abstract: The tale of Malcolm Bricklin, Richard Hatfield, and their early 1970s automobile venture is a well-known episode in New Brunswick’s history. Dream Car: Bricklin's Fantastic SV1 and the End of Industrial Modernity connects the car and events in Saint John, Minto, and Fredericton to a wider frame, “seeing” important North American economic, political, social, and cultural transformations from the driver’s seat of an SV1. Along with revisiting aspects of the book, the lecture will explore three “unwritten” Bricklin perspectives of postwar societal change: the changing media landscape; New Brunswick’s unique place in the global petroleum political economy; and the stories of workers who built the vehicle.
Hosted by UNB Fredericton’s faculty of arts, the W. Stewart MacNutt Memorial Lecture honours the late historian, professor and humanitarian for his work at UNB and his efforts to develop the history of the Atlantic Provinces as a field of study.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
