Jeremy Adamson, Harvey Station, N.B., bachelor of science in engineering (civil), UNB Fredericton, strives to make a difference in the community. He is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and edits the engineering students’ online publication The Pillar. He hopes to pursue a career in structural engineering and to provide financial support for future students to attend UNB.
Clair Barefoot, Quispamsis, N.B., bachelor of arts, honours in psychology, UNB Saint John, is developing a fool-proof experiment to identify errors in lie detector tests. She also enjoys teaching Highland Dancing and volunteering in the community. She has been involved with the Best Buddies program for more than four years and is currently the UNB Saint John campus coordinator.
Ross Campbell, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science, honours in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, has a thirst for knowledge and enjoys sharing it with others. He is a peer mentor, teaching assistant and tutor. He has spent several summers working with children at YMCA-YWCA’s Camp Glenburn. Biology is his passion and has led him to an understanding of the genetic bar-coding of green algae.
Wren Crandall, Long Reach, N.B., bachelor of arts, honours in philosophy and major in politics, UNB Saint John, is devoting her life to the study of root causes of problems afflicting our communities. She is actively involved with the AIDS Saint John Needle Exchange program and is vice-president of the UNB Saint John Woman’s Resource Center. She plans to continue her education with a Master of Urban Planning degree.
Scott Culligan, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science, honours in chemistry-physics, UNB Fredericton, is working toward feeding Fredericton. His volunteer work involves collecting food and distributing it to local food banks. Academically, he is well published and intrigued by hydrogen storage. He plans to pursue a career in renewable energy and hydrogen storage research.
Randi Doyle, Vernon River, P.E.I., bachelor of arts, honours in psychology, UNB Fredericton, wants to pursue a career in experimental psychology. Her passions include working with the Fredericton Family and Friends Eating Disorder Support Group, and the University Women’s Centre. Her devotion to her studies has led her to become a teaching assistant to help other students.
Anil Imbulgoda, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science, honours in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, loves to give back to the community. His volunteer work with the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and nursing homes is helping him to foster his love for patient care. His work with UNICEF took him to Sri Lanka to help collect data and assess the situations in the tsunami camps. He hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
Nancy Kang, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science, honours in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, is an active member of the Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick. Her work with the association includes developing a Canadian cultural course which will one day be offered to immigrants. She also volunteers at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and is a member of the Fredericton Ladies Choir.
Kanishk Karol, New Maryland, N.B., bachelor of science, honours in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, is devoted to learning and applying his knowledge to help others. He understands that a successful career in medicine requires a strong background in science, humanities and social science disciplines. Kanishk volunteers with the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Let’s Talk Science and the Fredericton Indo-Canadian Association.
Patrick Keeler, Shelburne, N.S., bachelor of philosophy (leadership), Minor in Biology, UNB Fredericton, has volunteered at several orphanages in Vietnam. In Fredericton, he is working with the Multicultural Association to develop a program which involves immigrant youth in the community. He also brings passion to his academic work by designing unique answers to assignments through painting, music, and other performance pieces.
Kerri Krawec, St. Catharines, Ont., bachelor of arts, honours in political science, UNB Fredericton, wants to use her education to help people who are less fortunate. Her work with Engineers Without Borders has allowed her to apply her education in a practical setting. She has worked with other students to form a feminist reading group to continue their learning outside the classroom.
Toby Kruger, Calgary, Alta., bachelor of laws, UNB Fredericton, is an advocate for equal rights. His legal internship has taken him to Bangladesh with Canadian Lawyers Abroad where he completed research analysis and program development on legal empowerment. He is very active in the UNB Student Chapter of Canadian Lawyers Abroad, the Law Journal and the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition.
Tyler McDonell, Aylesford, N.S., bachelor of science in kinesiology, UNB Fredericton, works closely with a high school football team to help motivate the players academically. He has an inquisitive mind and adeptly balances academics, athletics and community involvement. He is an active member of the Kinesiology Society and the UNB Pre-Med Society.
Laura (Cass) McPhee, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts, double major in information and communication studies and English, UNB Saint John, has a passion for theatre arts. She has spent a vast amount of time working with musical productions and writing scripts. When she is not acting she spends her time learning sign language. She believes that her university education has made her travels abroad and volunteer experiences with the Golden Key Honour Society all the more exciting.
Rachel Savidge, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science in engineering (mechanical), UNB Fredericton, is a student leader in engineering and has served on the organizing committee for a national engineering conference. She spends her free time volunteering as a peer mentor, entertaining seniors, mesmerizing Grade 3 and 4 students with science and engineering topics, and training with the cross country running team.
Elizabeth (Beth) Scammell Trueman, Point de Bute, N.B., bachelor of nursing (advanced standing program), UNB Fredericton, believes that success is measured by the number of lives that you have touched. She spends her free time helping to foster the growth of the UNB Nursing Society and volunteers with the Children of Chernobyl Fund. She also believes in maintaining a green environment and helps to do so with her wind-powered house.
Julie Sharp, Stirling, Ont., bachelor of arts, double honours in philosophy and psychology, UNB Fredericton, will be working with orphanages in several African countries next year. A teaching assistant, she also plans weekly activities to help promote healthy active living for children and volunteers with Read with the Reds and Heads Up with the Reds.
Jane Simmons, Hensall, Ont., bachelor of science in engineering (geological), UNB Fredericton, believes that even small actions can make a difference. She applies her academic resources to programs such as Habitat for Humanity and the Quest 4 Club. Her work with Engineers Without Borders has helped her to develop an intense understanding of water-related issues in Canada and abroad.
Sara Thornton, Durham Bridge, N.B., bachelor of arts, major in psychology, UNB Fredericton, has found a deep strength within herself. An accomplished author, entrepreneur, researcher and single parent, she uses her past to help others see that there is a way through the darkest times. She has positively influenced the lives of many youth in the community and plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology.
Barbara Vriends, West Covehead, P.E.I. — bachelor of science in engineering (mechanical), UNB Fredericton, has found balance between an active mind and body. A member of the UNB Varsity Reds Volleyball team, she also maintains high academic standing and is involved with the Student Society of Mechanical Engineers. She spends her free time volunteering with the Read with the Reds program.
Robert Wilson, Oromocto, N.B. — bachelor of arts, double major in history and political science, and bachelor of education (middle/young adult years), UNB Fredericton, loves to coach and has been doing so for over 30 years. He has served as the president of ALPS (Adult Learners and Part-Time Students) for two years. As an adult learner, he realizes that creating an environment which fosters a sense of acceptance for all adult learners is of the utmost importance.
