Jocelyn Ball, Riverview, N.B., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, submerged herself in another culture by serving as a conservation volunteer on the Klipkop Private Wildlife Reserve in South Africa. On campus, she has reached out to help others as a hall proctor in both Joy Kidd and Bridges residences and is building her interpersonal and professional skills by working as a server for Sodexho. She is acting chair of New Brunswick Advisory Council on Youth, of which she has been an active member since 2004.
Alison Bird, Rocky Harbour, Nfld., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, helping to build a positive living environment as an educational proctor in Neill House and a positive learning environment as a Renaissance College ambassador. Her passion for international development was expressed as a volunteer English teacher and labourer at the Congal Biological Station in Ecuador last summer. In the community, she has created and organized Knitting for a Need, making scarves for the teenage residents of Chrysalis House.
Rachel Campbell, McAdam, N.B., bachelor of science in kinesiology (honours), UNB Fredericton, began volunteering at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation as part of a course requirement but loved it so much she continued for a second year. As a hall proctor in UNB Fredericton's new residence and a peer mentor in Kinesiology, she reaches out to other students, sharing, helping and encouraging them outside the classroom. Her love of physical activity is exemplified in her wide-ranging involvement in intramural sports.
Danielle Culp, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of arts with a major in psychology, UNB Fredericton, has put her academic training to work in a variety of ways, volunteering with seniors at both the River Valley Health Veterans Unit and the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. She has also applied her knowledge as a volunteer camp counselor for children with autism and neurological disorders. On campus, she works as a research assistant on projects related to chronic pain and anxiety disorders, training for her career as a clinical psychologist.
Emily Davidson, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with an honours in English, UNB Saint John, is comfortable both onstage and behind the scenes through her work as an actor and assistant stage manager with the Saint John Theatre Company. Since 1999, she has been an active member of the Vineyard Church, leading the young adults group and serving in several other ministries. On campus, she applies her writing skills as the arts and life editor and a copy editor for the biweekly student newspaper, The Baron.
Jennifer Edmonds, Moncton, N.B., bachelor of science in kinesiology (honours), UNB Fredericton, has served in multiple roles for the Redsticks Field Hockey Club, a sport to which she has been dedicated for a long time. An active volunteer with various seniors' groups, she has also worked as a student assistant for rUNBuddies, the campus's highly successful Run for the Cure team. The St. Thomas University women's volleyball team benefited from her commitment to volunteer as its student athletic trainer last season.
Heather Elliott, Perth-Andover, N.B., bachelor of arts with an honours in psychology and bachelor of science with an honours in biology, UNB Fredericton, is a leader and executive member of Town House, an organization for students living off-campus. She has also played leadership roles on the Student Pride and Alumni Relations Committee and the Red Shirts Orientation Committee which welcomes new students to campus each fall. She is the coordinator of UNBF?s Sexuality Centre, which provides education and advice to students.
Katharine Herrington, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of science with a major in biology, UNB Saint John, was motivated by personal experience to volunteer for hospice and palliative care at the Saint John Regional Hospital. On campus, she served as a photographer for The Baron and an editor of the yearbook celebrating UNB Saint John's 40th anniversary. She is secretary of the Biology Society and, in her spare time, an avid sailor.
Andrea Jones, Unionville, Ont., bachelor of science in kinesiology, UNB Fredericton, turned a health ethics assignment into an ongoing relationship with the residents of York Manor seniors' facility. As a student assistant with the rUNBuddies, Run for the Cure Team, she helped to raise $27,000. With the goal of becoming an optometrist, she went to work for Sears Optical and became regional coordinator for the Gift of Sight program.
Sarah Jones, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with an honours in history, UNB Saint John, is bringing the arts to a youth audience through her service on the board of directors and programming committee of the Imperial Theatre and the board of directors of the Saint John Arts Centre. An accomplished pianist, she has served as music director for a number of community productions including Godspell and Aida.
Ivan Kantor, Cambridge-Narrows, N.B., bachelor of science in chemical engineering, UNB Fredericton, is an active volunteer with UNB Fredericton's award-winning chapter of Engineers Without Borders. He has also lent his skills to Habitat for Humanity in Fredericton. On campus, he served for two years as vice-president of the Lady Beaverbrook Residence and has contributed to the growth of the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Society in his faculty.
Daniel Monid, Weston, Ont., bachelor of education with a concentration on middle/young adults, UNB Fredericton, is a nationally competitive swimmer, CIS gold medallist and former captain of the Varsity Reds swim team. He served as president of the UNBF Athletes Council and volunteered as a motivational speaker for the AUS Esteem Team. He also coached the Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team for a number of years, helping to inspire younger athletes.
Lee-Ann Myers, Dartmouth, N.S., bachelor of arts with a double honours in history and sociology, UNB Fredericton, uses her academic prowess as a peer mentor for students in Arts 1000. Every week she volunteers in the community soup kitchen and co-ordinates child care for adults participating in the Alpha Program at Brunswick Street Baptist Church. She also helps to keep the doors open at the Women's Centre on campus.
Miriam Phillips, Charlottetown, P.E.I., bachelor of nursing, UNB Saint John, founded the mentorship program to support new nurses in the emergency department of the Saint John Regional Hospital. She is one of the province's first Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, combining forensics with empathetic care, and is a committee member for the annual Emergency Nurses and Emergency Services Symposium, attracting upwards of 200 health-care professionals.
Simon Richard, Montreal, Que., bachelor of nursing, UNB Fredericton, is acting president of the Adult Learners and Part-Time Students Association which has brought him into contact with a broad cross-section of students. He has worked with disenfranchised patients as a student nurse at the Community Health Clinic and worked extensively with army cadets, of which he was a member for many years. Indoor and outdoor intramural soccer keeps him fit.
Mark Robertson, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science with an honours in biology, UNB Fredericton, aspires to become a doctor and worked on his bedside manner by volunteering at the River Valley Veterans Health Unit and with the Goodnight Program at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, which helps patients get ready for bed. He raised more than $300 as a member of the RONA Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour and helped with the rUNBuddies barbecue.
Christopher Ryan, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of laws, UNB Fredericton, is don of Tibbits Hall residence where he mediates conflicts and organizes enriching activities for the students. He is co-president of the Christian Legal Fellowship which provides a community within a community for law students interested in religion. He has spent many years as a mentor to socially disadvantaged youth in the community.
Justin Strong, Quispamsis, N.B., bachelor of science in electrical engineering, UNB Fredericton, has spent many hours involved in governance as a faculty of engineering representative on the student union, member of its executive and volunteer with the Red Shirts orientation program for four years. The Engineering Undergraduate Society also benefited from his energy and enthusiasm, where he served as vice-president for special events.
Simone Tielesh, Surrey, B.C., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, is a hall proctor at the Maggie Jean Chestnut residence and a member of the Fredericton Senate. In both situations, she works for the best interests of the students she represents. She serves as secretary of the UNBF Environmental Society. Off-campus she is a role model to young women as a Brownie and Sparks leader for the Girl Guides of Canada.
Justin Wies, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, is helping to start new traditions through his involvement with the Renaissance College Society. He worked for a summer in Slovenia's health and education system with disabled children and mentally challenged adults. At home, he coaches middle school football and teaches Sunday school at Nashwaaksis United Church.
Kathleen Wright, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with an honours in English, UNB Saint John, has a passion for reading which is exemplified in her volunteer work with a number of literacy organizations including the Storytent Program, Bookwagon Program, Harry Potter Reading Club (which she founded), and as a community volunteer with her local literacy program. Young children and access to reading materials are a special focus of her involvement.
Jessica Yeates, New Maryland, N.B., bachelor of science with an honours in biochemistry, UNB Fredericton, is a member of the Varsity Reds Women's Volleyball Team and shares her athletic prowess by coaching teens in the sport she loves. She is a volunteer with Heads up with the Reds and Reading with the Reds. Her aspirations to become a doctor are
furthered by volunteering on the pediatric wing of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.
