2006 Sir Howard Douglas Scholars

Angela Acorn, Springbrook, Ont., bachelor of science in kinesiology (honours), UNB Fredericton, has assisted a student with a learning disability and worked as a volunteer at the Oromocto Physiotherapy Clinic.  Ms. Acorn received the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council summer research bursary, which provided her with the opportunity to assist graduate students with their research projects.  She is also a volunteer with UNB's Learning Eating Activity Program, working with children who are overweight to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.  An avid volleyball and softball player, she has been a member of several sports teams, including the UNB Women’s Softball Team.

Marc Arseneau, New Maryland, N.B., bachelor of nursing, UNB Fredericton, has made several medical trips to Haiti as a volunteer with Healing Hands for Haiti since the first year of his academic studies.  He is a volunteer firefighter for the community of New Maryland, a peer mentor for the nursing program and treasurer for the Nursing Society.  Mr. Arseneau is also an active volunteer for both the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital pediatric unit and the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre.

Emily Biden, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science with a major in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, has been a distinguished member of the Air Cadet Program, holding various leadership positions including Warrant Officer First Class.  She has volunteered at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, the Stan Cassidy Centre, Canadian Red Cross blood donor clinics; raised funds for families in need; and participated in the Cadets Caring for Canada program.  Ms. Biden is also a Training Officer for the flying scholarship program.  An instructor for Worlds UNBound, she has conducted workshops about science and engineering for young children.

Natasha Bonnar, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with double majors in history and politics, UNB Saint John, is director of the Women’s Resource Centre, a student assistant in the Saint John Senate Office, and peer mentor for first-year arts students.  She is also a student liaison for the Chinese Cultural Association and regularly volunteers for the Animal Rescue League’s “Dog Jog”.  Ms. Bonnar is an active member in various organizations including the Golden Key Honor Society, Keith’s Crew, Multi-Cultural Society, Biology Society and Political Science Society.

Stephanie Brady, St. Catharines,  Ont., bachelor of business administration, UNB Fredericton, is a member of the Varsity Reds Women’s Soccer Team, the social/sports representative for Tibbits Hall residence, the events coordinator for the Drinksmart executive; an organizer for the Pushing Carts to Warm Hearts charity event; and a fundraiser at the UNB Office of Development and Donor Relations.

Lyndsey Brooks, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science with honours in biology-chemistry, UNB Fredericton, A research assistant in the chemistry department, Ms. Brooks also volunteers as a peer mentor for the faculty of science, where she acts as a liaison between professors and students.  She has worked at the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre as a physiotherapist assistant.  Ms. Brooks is a youth group coordinator for her church where she organizes and facilitates events for young people.  Her future plans include obtaining a master’s degree in physiotherapy. 

Alexandra Pope, Douglas, N.B., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, is the arts and entertainment editor for The Brunswickan, where she also recruits new volunteer writers.  Ms. Pope helped to coordinate a press conference for Renaissance College, and founded a new student newspaper, The Troubadour, which reflects the experiences and beliefs of Renaissance students and integrators.  She also volunteered at the ACJ-YMCA in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.  While there, she taught English to young people and assisted with distributing medications in the poor rural province of El Seibo.  She plans to pursue post-graduate studies in journalism.

Laura Richard, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of science with a major in chemistry, UNB Fredericton, she has worked as a student researcher for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council-USRA and the National Research Council for Women in Science and Engineering programs, conducting research in inorganic chemistry labs.  She has also worked at the university as a computer laboratory technician and student marker.  Ms. Richard has earned a blue belt in karate and is vice-president of the UNBF Martial Arts Club.  She has worked for the UNB Orientation Program and on its executive.  After graduation, she intends to pursue graduate studies in chemistry.

Heather Roxborough, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of arts with honours in psychology, UNB Fredericton, is a multi-talented individual who excels at sports as well as singing.  She is an accomplished opera singer and has frequently sung the national anthem at university events.  She is also the chair of the Fredericton Community Foundation Youth in Philanthropy as well as a director on the board of the foundation.  Ms. Roxborough is a member of the UNB Psychology Undergraduate Society and the founder of Fredericton’s first Youth Advisory Council.  She has also worked as a peer mentor for her faculty.  

Chelsea Seale, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with honours in English, UNB Fredericton, has balanced academic excellence with active participation in the theatre.  As a work-study and summer student, she has gone on tour with Theatre UNB’s Fringe tours.  Ms. Seale has been involved in several Theatre UNB and NotaBle Arts productions, and helped to promote the NotaBle Arts Theatre Festival.  She has also been a peer mentor in the faculty of arts for several years.

Rebekah Sears, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor of arts with honours in history, UNB Fredericton, is a peer mentor for Arts 1000 students and is a member of the History Society.  She is a volunteer for various children’s programs in her church.  Ms. Sears also volunteers at the Fredericton Community Kitchen, tutors high school students, and is a recruiter for the faculty of arts.

Stephanie Yorke, Truro, N.S., bachelor of arts with honours in English, UNB Fredericton, is an accomplished poet and playwright, and has won awards for her plays produced through the NotaBle Arts Theatre Festival.  She is head of the English Department’s Albert Ross Society and is a writer for The Brunswickan.  Ms. Yorke hosts a radio show on CHSR called Curds and Whey.  As a peer mentor, she assisted new international students who were entering the arts program.  She is also an executive member of the Circle K campus community service club.  She is involved with her church choir and is an editor for a church publication.

Ellen Creighton, Moncton, N.B., bachelor of laws, UNB Fredericton, is a student representative on the law faculty’s Curriculum Committee, she has also co-chaired the Environmental Law Society and served as a co-editor of the UNB Law Journal, a student-run publication that publishes two editions per year.  She is currently serving as vice-president (external) of the Student Union, where she has helped to focus media attention on various student concerns, and is one of two student representatives on the campaign committee for the Forging Our Futures Law campaign. 

Adam Dickinson, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of business administration with a major in economics, UNB Saint John, is treasurer for the board of directors at Baron Publications Inc. and is involved in production, editing and writing for The Baron.  He is a campaign ambassador for the UNB Forging Our Futures campaign, as well as a member of the Business Administration Society.  Mr. Dickinson has worked as a Community University Research Alliance project research assistant for Dean of Arts Robert MacKinnon.  An avid photographer, he runs his own business, Adam Dickinson Photography.

Martha Eggenberger, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of science in electrical engineering, UNB Fredericton, has acted as both a tutor and student marker for introductory mathematics courses; a peer mentor for the faculty of engineering; and an educational proctor (acting as a liaison between professors and students as well as providing support and counseling to students with academic or personal issues).  She is President of the Engineering Undergraduate Society.  Ms. Eggenberger is also a student ambassador with the UNB Forging Our Futures campaign.  She has interned in the electrical and instrumentation maintenance department at Irving Pulp and Paper and as a Quality Assurance Analyst at Genesys Laboratories Canada Inc.

Rebekah Freymond, L'Amable, Ont., bachelor of science in forest engineering, UNB Fredericton, is president of the Forest Engineering Students Association where she takes a leading role in organizing events and oversees the executive team.  She is also team leader for Worlds UNBound Quest 4 Girls Club, which helps young girls to foster an interest in science and engineering.  Ms. Freymond organizes a group of university students to travel to various public schools to undertake engineering-related projects with the girls.  She also tutors a middle school student in mathematics on a weekly basis.

Jason Goldlist, Toronto, Ont., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies, UNB Fredericton, was a candidate for Fredericton City Council in 2004.  He enjoys the challenges of being a student government representative for Renaissance College.  Mr. Goldlist developed and delivered sport modules at the United Nations sponsored Play for Peace International Youth Camp in Switzerland.  He is founder and president of Jewish Student Services, the only organization of its type in New Brunswick.  He is also a leadership coordinator for the UNB Student Investment Fund of over $1.8 million of provincial pension fund money.  His future plans are to pursue graduate studies in business.

Enoch Guimond, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of arts with a major in philosophy, UNB Saint John, has held several teaching assistant positions for undergraduate courses in philosophy.  He has been very active in the UNB Saint John media outlets, hosting a weekly poetry program for the CFMH campus radio station and working extensively for The Baron, the campus newspaper.  He has tutored many friends and acquaintances and has helped many people succeed in their academic pursuits over the years.

Melanie Henry, New Market, Ont., bachelor of philosophy in leadership studies with a minor in biology, UNB Fredericton, has worked as a classroom facilitator for Partners for Youth, a program that assists young people with social and behavioural difficulties.  She is also a student senator, treasurer for Renaissance College and a volunteer for the pediatric unit of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.  Ms. Henry plans to pursue medical studies in Ontario.

Jillian Lawson, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of nursing, Advanced Standing Program, UNB Saint John, completed an undergraduate honours thesis in psychology at UNB Saint John in 2005.  She is coordinator for the UNB Sexuality Centre, peer mentor for the nursing program, a home care/personal care worker for Integrity Home Health Services, and a member of the AIDS Saint John Education-Awareness Committee. She is also secretary of the UNB Nursing Society, co-chair of the Nursing Charity Gala Committee, and a member of the Hurricane Katrina Teddy Bear Drive Committee and the UNB Student Union External Affairs Committee.

Kari Lynch, Saint John, N.B., bachelor of business administration with a major in accounting, UNB Saint John, is a peer mentor for her faculty, assisting first-year students in their transition from high school to university. Through the business co-op program, she worked for Irving Forest Services in early 2005 and later worked for Ernst & Young. She is a member of the Business Society. Last year, Ms. Lynch studied for a semester at UNB Fredericton and became a member of both the UNB Fredericton Business Society and Circle K. She is currently participating in a five-month student exchange in Poitiers, France.

Rachel Marsh, Hamilton, Ont., bachelor of arts with double honours in English and history, UNB Fredericton, has a strong interest in medieval history and literature, which is reflected in her academic achievements in a very challenging program. She is a peer mentor for the Arts 1000 course, as well as a tutor for both the English and history departments. Last year, Ms. Marsh was on the Orientation Committee for Joy Kidd House. She is also an active member of the History Society.

Rodney Parker, Porter Cove, N.B., bachelor of arts with honours in philosophy, and bachelor of science with honours in mathematics, UNB Fredericton, has been awarded several scholarships. His contributions to the university and the community have been many and varied. He is president of the UNB Philosophy Society and has tutored students in linear algebra and statistics courses. Mr. Parker has also acted as a research assistant for the department of philosophy.

Melissa Persaud, Fredericton, N.B., bachelor in science with a major in biology, UNB Fredericton, has volunteered at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for several years and is currently working with cancer patients and their families. She has also volunteered at Mercy Ships International to help alleviate the suffering of the poor. Ms. Persaud is co-chair of the AIDS New Brunswick Youth Council Committee. On campus, she has worked as a tutor for several biology and psychology courses, earned accolades for her participation in the Student Pride and Alumni Relations Committee, spent many hours as Chair of the Women's Centre and been a university orientation leader and science faculty peer mentor.

Erin Peters, Rothesay, N.B., bachelor of nursing, UNB Saint John, demonstrated her strong clinical skills in all aspects of her nursing practice courses and makes a consistent effort to assist with class or departmental projects that enhance the image of the UNB Nursing program in the community. She is active in her community as a volunteer soccer coach and parent volunteer at an elementary school. Ms. Peters has also been a volunteer at the “Teddy Bear” Fair for the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation.
