Salary Range:
$66,382.00 - $92,935.00 per annum

YOUR FOCUS:
- Analyze and assess legal risk to the University as it relates to research, intellectual property, ethics, export control and other general matters.
- Provide legal and policy advice to the Executive Director of ORS and VPR on a wide range of issues pertaining to research and commercialization.
- Draft, negotiate, and facilitate research agreements to allow for the successful administration of the University’s sponsored research, knowledge and technology transfer, and commercialization activities.
- Review the structure and language of agreements, draft new agreements and templates and update existing templates when necessary to meet legal requirements.
- Provide legal advice to UNB employees and ORS agreements officers on terms in research agreements, provide legal advice and potential remedies to explore on delinquent and high-risk files, and create or review appropriate legal documents to implement and follow-through on these remedies.
- Liaise with the Office of Risk Management, the Intellectual Property Manager, the General Counsel and other University Counsel to discuss issues and provide assistance where necessary on issues which may affect the rights of faculty or staff bargaining unit members or students.
- Represent the University in negotiations with opposing public and private legal counsel on matters in University's research portfolio.
- Navigate legal issues and identify legal risks of certain research and intellectual property agreements to the University.
- Provide advice on ability to comply and actual compliance with terms of research related contracts.
- Provide legal advice on a wide range of policy issues pertaining to research and intellectual property.
- Stay current on a wide range of legal practice areas (i.e., corporate and commercial, intellectual property, research ethics and export control) in order to provide appropriate and competent legal counsel.
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Bachelor's Degree in Law.
- 3 to 5 years as a member in good standing of the Law Society of New Brunswick (or equivalent provincial association).
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in contract drafting and negotiation of agreements, working with academia or industry or an equivalent combination thereof.
Additional Strengths
- Education/training in business law, contracts and commercial law, legal risks and intellectual property law, and/or equivalent experience. Ideally also include experience in export control and research ethics or an expectation to learn it.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the legal risk associated with the commercialization relationships and agreements in the academic research environment is required.
- Excellent knowledge of the laws of NB and Canada particularly as it relates to corporate, commercial, contract and intellectual property law.
- Drafting and reviewing of research agreements and commercial contracts; and demonstrable understanding and experience of research administration is an asset.
