The Physics Department of the University of New Brunswick conducts world-class research in four broad areas: Materials Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Space and Atmospheric Research, Quantum Sensing, and Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics with undergraduate and graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) degrees awarded in Physics. The Physics department is introducing the Engineering Physics Program, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, in the Fall of 2023. The Engineering Physics Program has two streams: Space Systems and Optical Engineering.
The Department of Physics at the University of New Brunswick invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Space Systems Engineering or Optical Engineering that complements the existing research strength of the Department in the research areas mentioned above. The incumbent will be an integral part of the Engineering Physics Program and will support the growth of the program. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor starting July 1, 2024, or as soon thereafter as possible.
The incumbent will spend most of their time directly engaged in scientific research, teaching, and graduate and undergraduate student supervision as a faculty member. Teaching duties will include undergraduate courses in Engineering Physics and courses in the area of the appointee's research specialty at the graduate level. This position will require supervising graduate students and other researchers, interacting with external partners, promoting Engineering Physics, the Faculty of Science, and UNB, and identifying and utilizing national and international research opportunities and industrial connections. Given the above, the candidate should demonstrate in their application the ability to work with and lead a team of researchers that includes possible industry linkages. As this position is an academic appointment, qualifications demonstrating the ability to transfer knowledge in classroom environments, develop new classroom material and inspire scholarship are also essential.
The appointee must have completed a doctorate in Space Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics, or related areas that fits one of the two streams of the Engineering Physics Program. The appointee should also have post-doctoral experience with demonstrated independent research achievements. Preference will be given to the candidate with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) qualification or who is eligible and willing to become a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of New Brunswick within the first three years of the appointment.
