Greg Young is remembered for his passion for work and his relationships, and as an active volunteer and generous donor.
Greg grew up in Toronto with his two sisters. Their family were members of the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. Greg and his twin sister, Debbie, trained there and became Canadian ice dancing champions. After completing his bachelor of arts in economics at York University, Greg followed his passion for skating to Fredericton. There, he completed his master of arts in economics at the University of New Brunswick, and was a well loved and respected skating coach.
In Fredericton Greg also met the love of his life, Janet. They married in April 1983, and after graduating from UNB they moved to Toronto to pursue their dreams. For Greg, this meant raising a large family and working on Bay Street. Greg and Janet raised their four children in Oakville. He is remembered as a thoughtful, devoted and supportive father, and eventually found much joy in spoiling his grandchildren, as well.
Greg spent 38 years working in finance, on both Bay Street and Wall Street. When he wasn’t sporting a tie and briefcase, Greg spent many hours volunteering as a board member at the Canadian Figure Skating Association, president of the Oakville Skating club, and donating his time to various charities, most recently the Kerr Street Mission where he distributed food hampers each Wednesday.
Greg died on September 26, 2023, surrounded by his wife and their children. To honour his memory, Greg’s friends and family have established the Gregory Alexander Young Scholarship at UNB. The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Fredericton campus student who is enrolled in the bachelor of business administration or arts degree programs, pursuing an honours in economics.
