Dr. Gary Worrell found tremendous pride in helping the countless students who benefited from his stern but equally caring and compassionate guidance. He spent his entire professional career at UNB Saint John, where his memory will continue to live on.
Gary L. Worrell was born Jan. 10, 1953. After graduating from McAdam High School in 1971, Gary further pursued education by attending UNB (BPE ’75), Penn State (MSc ’77) and Florida State (PhD ’87).
Gary spent his 41-year career at UNB Saint John and was recognized for his dedicated service in 2012 when he was awarded the coveted President’s Medal.
As a nationally certified soccer referee, Gary officiated countless matches throughout the Maritimes and Canada for more than 25 years. His intimate knowledge of the rulebook made him a resource for other soccer leagues and institutions, and he was called upon for “expert advice or rulings” on occasion.
After suffering a heart incident, Gary led a cautious but fulfilling life for more than 20 years. He loved time with his family, spending summers at the lake, cooking, recreational sports, and spirited conversation. Gary was always mindful of the opinion of others and is remembered as a great listener who always thought before he spoke.
Gary died on Oct. 25, 2020, at the age of 67. To honour his memory, Gary’s wife, Sue, along with their family and friends have established the Dr. Gary Worrell Memorial Soccer Scholarship. The award will be given to a Saint John campus student who is a member of the UNB Seawolves soccer team.
