LCol. Dr. Erin Savage had a passion for life and serving others that characterized her university career. Her tenacity successfully blended with her intellectual abilities, whether it was on the court, in the classroom or helping others. Sadly, Erin died in 2014 from breast cancer but her inspiration lives on. As one of the most outstanding student-athletes in the rich history of the UNB women’s basketball program, Erin’s family, friends and former teammates salute her influence and honour her contributions by establishing the LCol. Erin Savage CD, MD Scholarship.
Erin played an instrumental and inspirational role for the UNB Reds, earning accolades on the court for her combination of skills as a player and abilities as a student, where she was twice recognized as a Canadian Interuniversity Sport Academic All-Canadian. Basketball provided an important outlet for Erin, dating to her time as a star player for Carleton North High School. In addition to her four years playing with the UNB Reds, where she helped lead the team to the 1994-95 Atlantic University Sport championship, Erin was a member of several provincial junior basketball teams, Team New Brunswick which competed in the 1997 Francophone Games and the provincial women’s team that competed at the 1993 Canada Games.
After graduating from UNB in 1996, Erin attended medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, then spent two years of family medical residency at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Erin joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1998, during her second year of medical school. After completing her family medicine residency in 2002, Erin was posted to the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment in Gagetown, New Brunswick. There, she impressed again, developing a reputation as an outstanding clinician, passionate patient advocate and a tough-as-nails military officer. In 17 years of service, she grew to become one of the most respected physicians in the Forces. She was deployed to Haiti in 2004 and Afghanistan in 2007 in support of the Royal Canadian Regiment, where she earned a Chief of Defence Staff Commendation.
The scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to a member of the UNB Reds women’s basketball team who has completed at least the first two years of an undergraduate degree program. In addition, the recipient will be on the Dean’s List and will be involved in the community.
