Education

  • PhD, 2019 - University of New Brunswick (UNB). Title of Dissertation: Investigating the Roles of Nurses in School-Based Positive Mental Health Initiatives in New Brunswick.
  • MN, 1999 – UNB. Title of Thesis: Pattern Identification and Expanding Consciousness During the Transition of “Low-Risk” Pregnancy: A Study Embodying Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness
  • Diploma in University Teaching, 1999 – UNB
  • BA, 1990 - Dalhousie University (Major: English)
  • BN, 1988 – UNB (First Division)

In addition to the above, I continuously update my knowledge of research, trends, and issues pertaining to my areas of practice and scholarship.

Areas of interest

I enjoy weaving clinical practice, theory, pedagogy, and praxis into my teaching and value strength-based, upstream approaches that promote health equity and social justice. These impact the ways in which I approach my areas of interest:

  • Maternal Child Health
  • Perinatal Education
  • Breastfeeding and Baby-Friendly Initiatives
  • Comprehensive School Health
  • Population Health
  • Immunization
  • Harm Reduction
  • Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI)
  • Environmental Health
  • Organizational Culture and Positive Mental Health

Health and Education Research Group

The UNB Health and Education Research Group (HERG) develops applied health and education research initiatives that may be used to inform practice and policy development. It was initiated by Dr. Bill Morrison and Dr. Patti Peterson, Co-Executive Directors who also taught in the Faculty of Education.

Bill and Patti accomplished an incredible amount and were visionaries in their field. When they retired, they allowed Dr. Melissa Garrett (Faculty of Education) and me to become the new Co-Executive Directors of HERG. We recognize that we have “big shoes to fill.”

Teaching

Within my philosophy of teaching, I recognize and value the experiences that students bring to the educational setting. We work together to create learning environments that are inclusive.

I teach primarily in the undergraduate program, in both classroom and clinical areas. Much of this work occurs in the areas of community and population health, maternity, and/or during preceptorship.

I am a full member of the Graduate Academic Unit (GAU) within the Faculty of Nursing and have served as the internal or external reader for students completing either their master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, education, and/or interdisciplinary studies. I’ve also been a peer reviewer for a number of journals, including the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research. I’ve been invited to review, and to contribute to nursing textbooks, in particular, Stanhope and Lancaster’s Community Health Nursing in Canada.

It is important to note that as a teaching professor, my role is comprised of teaching and service. I am not allocated time in my workload towards applying for funding or conducting research. Nevertheless, learning and scholarship are important to me and I make time for them. Below are selected examples from peer reviewed work spanning the past ten years.
