Robert Maher

Robert Maher joined the Faculty of Business Administration in 1988 and is a member of the Accounting/MIS Area. He teaches Administration, Financial Accounting, and Advanced Financial Accounting in the BBA program. He received the UNB Merit Award during 2004, in recognition of his scholarly and professional accomplishments, and he received the Faculty of Business Administration's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

He has an extensive record of academic and professional service. He was Assistant Dean (Undergraduate) from 1992 to 1998. Professor Maher is also active in professional accounting education through the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and since 2003 has been a member of its Council. He is Secretary, a member of the board of directors, and a member of the Executive of the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy. He has served on the Board of Examiners responsible for the Uniform Final Examination, the national entrance examination required to earn the Chartered Accountant designation. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Pension Plan for Academic Employees of the University of New Brunswick. The Board is responsible for all reports of the Pension Plan for academic employees, including all strategic investment decisions, and monitoring of results.

His research interests focus on the basic timing issues central to accrual accounting, the use (or not) of debits and credits, and issues in accounting education. Professor Maher is the Canadian author for Financial Accounting: Principles and Issues. This introduction to financial accounting textbook, in its second edition, has been widely used in undergraduate and graduate business programs across Canada. His publications have appeared in Administration and Society and the Journal of Accounting Case Research.
