Dr. Michael Sutherland is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE), UNB. UNB is Dr. Sutherland’s alma mater, he having received M.Sc.E. and Ph.D. degrees from GGE, specializing in land information management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

He is also a retired Professor of Land and Marine Administration Systems at the Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management (DGELM), Faculty of Engineering, The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.

At UWI, Dr. Sutherland held a number of administrative positions including Head of DGELM, and Deputy Dean (Undergraduate Affairs), Faculty of Engineering. Internationally, he was also Chair (2011-2014), Commission 4 (Hydrography), International Federation of Surveyors.

He has many years of international teaching experience in land administration, real property law, GIS, and cadastral systems (among other things) at institutions such as UWI, UNB, Ryerson University, York University, and the University of Guyana.

Dr. Sutherland has many years of direct geomatics-related research experience in the fields of GIS and multidimensional geospatial modelling, as well as in land and marine administration systems, including marine cadastre.

He also has extensive experience in other indirect geomatics-related fields such as climate change and ocean governance. He has produced over 180 publications, including 48 in peer-reviewed media, with an overall citation record of more than 1965.
