Dr . Liza Bolen is an Assistant Professor of French at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John. Originally from Québec, she completed an M.A. at the University of Victoria and went on to obtain her PhD from the University of British Columbia, in 2020.

She is the author of Mémoire sensorielle et migration dans le roman québécois contemporain : Ying Chen, Sergio Kokis, Dany Laferrière et Kim Thúy (Éditions de L’Épaulard, 2024). In this book, she examines how the senses influence time and space in narratives of migration and explores connecting themes such as food, childhood, and belonging.

Her research interests include (but are not limited to):

  • Contemporary Québécois Literature: Migration, Travel and Autofiction
  • Theories of Memory and Nostalgia
  • Sensory Studies and the Representation of the Body in Literature
  • Childhood and Literature: Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Representation of Childhood in Literature
  • Food Studies

Since joining the Department of Humanities and Languages in 2021, Dr . Bolen has taught a variety of lower and upper-level French courses. She has also co-founded the UNB Saint John French Club, an on-campus space for peer tutoring, cultural activities, and community engagement in French. She received the UNB Saint John Humanities and Languages Departmental Award for Teaching Excellence (DATE) in 2023-2024.
