Dr. Wladyslaw Cichocki is an Honorary Research Professor in the Department of French / Département d’études françaises at the University of New Brunswick. He holds MA and PhD degrees in Linguistics from the University of Toronto; his undergraduate training was in Mathematics. He joined UNB in 1985.
His primary area of interest is language variation and change, with a focus on sociophonetics and Acadian French. He has worked on quantitative methods used to analyze language data, social networks and variation in small rural communities. Dr. Cichocki is currently working on two projects: an acoustic phonetic analysis of speech timing in several dialects of Canadian French and a dialectometric study of phonetic variation in regional varieties of French spoken in New Brunswick. His research has been supported by Acfas, Canadian Heritage, CFI and SSHRC.
Dr. Cichocki has served as President of the Canadian Linguistic Association (2015-2017), President of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (2001-2003) and Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Methods in Dialectology (1999-2002). He has held visiting appointments at institutions in the United States (Cornell), the United Kingdom (Cambridge, Edinburgh) and Canada (Université de Moncton – Campus de Shippagan, Université du Québec à Montréal).
