Please mark your calendars for the first talk of our Fall 2025 Feminist Lunch Series to be given on Friday, Sept. 26 at 12:30pm in the Harriet Irving Library's Innovation Hub, Room 316, on UNB Campus in Fredericton by Dr. Jennifer Russell.

This year our focus at the Feminist Lunches will be on all aspects of Women's Health with talks on a variety of topics of interest.

The talk is titled: "Selfcare isn’t Selfish”.

Abstract: Health begins long before clinical care. This session explores how self-care —often dismissed as indulgent or selfish - is actually a vital act of prevention and resilience. We’ll challenge stereotypes that discourage rest, reflection, and personal well-being, and examine how these narratives intersect with broader determinants of health like income, gender, and caregiving roles. By reframing self-care as a population health strategy, we can see it not as a personal luxury, but as a collective necessity. Healthier individuals build stronger communities; it starts with unlearning what we’ve been taught.

Dr.  Russell is the Executive Director of the UNB Institute of Population Health and President of the NB College of Family Physicians. She previously served as NB's Chief Medical Officer of Health from 2018 to 2024, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her career spans clinical practice in family medicine, mental health, and addictions, as well as extensive public health leadership. She has also held roles in the Canadian Armed Forces and worked with the Horizon Health Network. She holds a BSc from UNB, a BA from Dalhousie, and a medical degree from Memorial University, completing her family medicine residency at Dalhousie in 2001. She has been recognized with two honorary doctorates (Mount Allison & Université de Moncton).

All are welcome!
