DOES SCIENCE REFUTE A PERSONAL GOD?
OLD AND NEW CHALLENGES OF SCIENCE-RELIGION RELATIONSHIP
with Dr. Marek Słomka
Thursday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
Carleton Hall 106
The Department of Philosophy is pleased to invite you to the Mac and Rena Watson Public Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 18, when we will welcome Dr. Marek Słomka, Professor, Philosophy of Religion at the Catholic University of Lubin.
Dr. Słomka's lecture, titled "Does Science Refute a Personal God? Old and New Challenges of Science-Religion Relationship" following J. F. Haught’s proposal, presents three answers to the following questions: “does science rule out a personal God?” and “is faith compatible with evolution?” The “conflict” response asserts that the natural sciences and religious faith are mutually exclusive. The “contrast” position claims that science and faith are each concerned with different levels or dimensions of reality. The “contact” approach underlines that religious faith and natural science inevitably interact. To differentiate the options plainly, allow imaginary spokespersons for each one to address you in a provocative way. The talk goes beyond Haught’s view to show old and new challenges of science-religion relationship.
We hope you can join us for this discussion.
Light refreshments will be served.
