The Department of Philosophy is pleased to invite you to the Mac and Rena Watson lecture on March 13 at 4 p.m. in Tilley Hall, Room 5, where we will welcome Dr. Liz Jackson, Associate Professor from the Department of Philosophy at Saint Louis University.
Dr. Jackson’s lecture, titled "The Puzzle of Faith and Reason," will discuss how it's widely thought that faith goes beyond the evidence. However, this raises the question: how could faith be rational? This is often known as the puzzle of faith and reason. First, I consider two proposed solutions to this puzzle, faith as testimony and faith as action, and argue they both fail. Then, I propose my own solution: faith breaks epistemic ties. I argue that my solution can explain how faith can be rational and go beyond the evidence, and, as a bonus, how faith can be voluntary.
We hope you can join us for this exciting discussion.
Light refreshments will be served.
