MusicUNB is excited to introduce a new series “Quartet +”, featuring the Saint John String Quartet and friends. Uncover hidden masterpieces of the string quartet’s repertoire in a program which illuminates each composer’s world.
Opening the concert is the “dean of Afro-American composers” William Grant Stills. HisLyric String Quartette (subtitled Musical Portraits of Three Friends) explores a deeply personal world. It is followed by Florence Price’s epic String Quartet No. 2, brilliantly blending influences of African American spirituals and dance with early twentieth-century classical conventions.
Closing the concert, a work of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, inspired by traditional African American music. This subtle, sophisticated clarinet quintet draws on the influences of folk music and Romanticism, reminiscent of Dvorak.
Come on a journey of discovery while we celebrate Black History month with these evocative masterpieces.
