Hockey is often celebrated as Canada’s most cherished sport and a vital cultural institution. Far from being the pro-social institution it is often assumed to be, hockey in Canada has been marred by scandals involving gender-based sexual violence, hazing, racism, head trauma, and drug abuse, among other issues. Such problems point to a larger systemic issue: Canada has a hockey problem.This academic panel unpacks aspects of hockey’s problem examined through the various lenses of our scholarly research into the sport
