Title: A Spooky Spectrum – optical transitions in chromium monohydride

Abstract: Our recent work targets laboratory investigation of the magnetic response of CrH and FeH, whose electronic systems in the near IR have observed in the atmospheres of cool stars. I will present some of the experimental and analytical challenges offered by the sextet systems of CrH in the near infrared, where molecular signatures are becoming increasingly important in the search for exo-planets.  Because many of the cool star hosts for exoplanets are magnetically active, we have investigated the Zeeman effect in CrH as well, with fields up to 5 kGauss. I will illustrate the consequences for telescope spectropolarimetry, with examples of spectra recorded at the Pic du Midi, and at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope.
