Title: The Monsters we Have to Fight: Fortifying Ourselves Against Kantian Vices
Kant refers to vices as the “monsters we have to fight.” This talk will explore what Kant means by vice and what he thinks is involved in fighting vice. Vice plays a far more central role in Kant’s ethical thought than is often recognized. Moreover, Kantian vice has both individual and social dimensions. The tendency to spread defamatory gossip, for instance, is an individual character flaw but it also contributes to a morally pernicious social world. In order to fight vice successfully, we have to improve not just ourselves, but the social environments that we inhabit.
